List of Zoochat Members Wanting to Found a Zoo

Ah, hold up, I think I get what you're saying now.

What you're insinuating is that your zoo wouldn't even have an operating budget of a million dollars, correct?

Depending on the species and the locality (and the associated legislature), this might not be entirely true. Where I currently live, the red tape to showcase domestic animals is greater than presenting the poisonous and venomous species of my exhibition.
I was not aware of this, but would think it easier to house domestics rather than zoo type species.

I don't know if my logic is correct, but I think it's like the sort of thing that domestics aren't worth displaying to value or something.

There are pro's and con's to each. A goat, sheep etc. can be kept outdoors, but requires more space than most smaller exotic species (which might require more energy for heating, artificial lighting etc.). The main issue is disease control; domestic animals in zoos are more likely to spread diseases that could impact the agricultural industry and cause severe eonomic consequences in a worst case scenario. Just remember the consequences of various past BSE, FMD, ASF, ESF etc. outbreaks. Therefore, there's a greater bureaucratic focus on domestic animals than on exotic species that are of little concern regarding Public Health or environmental aspects.

Good information. Thanks.

Here is my ideas for the zoo I hopefully will start in the future.
Year 1 animal list-
Ring-tailed Lemurs
Grant's Zebra
Lesser Kudu
Red Kangaroo
Emu
Scottish Highland Cattle
Kunekune Pig
Zebu
Miniature Donkey
African Pygmy Goat
Harlequin Sheep
Llama
East African Crowned Crane
Sulcata Tortoise
Keel-billed Toucan
Palawan Peacock Peasant
Red-crested Turaco
Red-footed Tortoise
Australian Crested Dove
Miniature Pony

The zoo would expand over time. Early projects would be a walk through aviary, and a building for small animals, as well as a few more exotic hoofstock species (like bison and camels). Long term goals would be AZA-accreditation, big cats, and giraffes. Of course, I would not start making this zoo until after I have at least 5-10 years of experience.

Interesting discussion. I am guessing that what most people posting on this topic would actually want to be it they thought about it long enough is a Curator at a well-funded zoo that specialises in their favorite animal group.

Being an owner usually means:
  • if the zoo is small and struggling, being overwhelmed by a never ending list of jobs, and never being able to take a break. I know of owners of small two or three person zoos who have not had a holiday in 20 years.
  • If the zoo is larger and financially successful, having a staff of people who deal day to day with the animals and make most of the decisions. Your job is to deal with the big issues, policies and crisis's, most of which have nothing to do with animals. If not careful you can get quite distant from the animals.

Location - Southern states (Texas maybe)
Species - World class, large variety, both terrestrial and aquatic
Time Frame - 10+ years most likely
Collaboration - Yes
Restraints - Finances and land
Long-Term Goals - AZA & WAZA accreditation, Orcas, Giant Pandas, Whale Sharks (I know, I'm ambitious)

Orcas, Giant Pandas and Whale Sharks all in one institution, that's a world's first!

Location: Midwest United States (Kansas, Missouri, etc.)
Species:Mostly terrestrial, but will have a part of the zoo specifically for aquatics. Animals will range from The Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia
Time Frame: probably 20-25 years
Collaboration: Would be appreciated
Restraints: Mostly Finance and Animal Rights Activists being like, "StoP LivIng In tHE Past! ZoOs Are No MoRe!!!1!!!!
Long Term Goals: Becoming a World Famous Zoo, breeding rare species, conservation efforts, and PANDAS. I NEED PANDAS. (also dolphins would be pretty nice, but:oops:)

Honestly, I wouldn't feel to restrained by those activists. They're still in a large minority. You just need to watch out that your zoo won't be like one of those poorly managed road-side parks that are often targeted. If you have your stuff sorted out well I don't think you will have a lot of issues with them, perhaps they may protest once, but they wouldn't gain much from it I'd imagine.

I'm... a little late, but as a wildlife lover who has had a dream of opening a zoo (well, park, but ig zoo park is a thing technically), I will reply to this.

1. Texas, Florida, SC and NC, and other southeastern states have come to mind before.

2. I hope for a park with megafauna, and of course smaller animals, like the birds, and reptiles and amphibians, and small mammals. Farmyard animals in a petting zoo area would be nice as well!

3. Based off research of what I could fin for other animal parks/ zoos, I'd expect 5 at the least and up to 10, maybe more years at most.

4. Iffy on this. Maybe with a friend who also shares my passion and knowledge.

5. Finances and getting everything in order.

Out of curiosity @all: how are your plans of opening your zoos going along? In particular the more ambitious ones, like @Zooreviewsuk and @grandelover?

Think that member is banned, due to his profile page being unavailable to view.

Like most users on here, 'he' hides his true identity behind a pseudonym.
If you can find out who he is, then you will soon see why as 'Childonias' has said, he is not likely to reply.
In the meantime, this thread really ought to moved to the 'fantasy' section...
