Animals You've Seen That Few Zoochatters Have Seen

Older zoochatters will remember Proboscis also at Twycross, Frankfurt and (I think it was) Basel(?) zoos in earlier decades too

I saw them in Cologne and Wilhelma in 1984.

:p

They aren't common, but there would be a lot of Zoochatters who have seen them because a lot of Zoochatters have been to Singapore, plus there were some in the Netherlands until recently.

On a similar note: Celebes crested macaque?

I know a few are kept in European collections, but I don't think I've ever seen one kept in US zoos.

They are however kept in the USA. 3 collections I know of are Memphis Zoo, DeYoung Family Zoo and Special Memories Zoo but there may be more.

More than three holders. I can't think of any not already listed off the top of my head but this species is uncommon in the US.

Interestingly they are commonest in the UK, a number of collections here have them ( London, Paignton, Newquay, Chester, Dudley, Howletts, Jersey, Thrigby(?) Drusillas all spring to mind), whereas in mainland Europe they are scarce.

Here is a more complete list for me:

Tree Pangolin (Brookfield Zoo)
Hawaiian Monk Seal (Minnesota Zoo)
Fatmucket (Minnesota Zoo)
Mucket (Minnesota Zoo)
Higgin's Pearly Eye (Minnesota Zoo, note this and the previous two are easy to miss on visits to Minnesota, making them even more rare)
Kodiak Bear (Wildwood Zoo)
Black-Billed Cuckoo (Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary)
Greater Prairie-Chicken (Wild, ssp. pinnatus, which I think even less ZooChatters have seen)
Booted Macaque (Special Memories Zoo)
Horned Guan (Saint Louis Zoo)
Eastern Red Bat (Wild)
Royal Antelope (Brookfield Zoo)
Raquet-Tailed Treepie (Minnesota)
Liger (Is this one actually that rare? Animal Haven Zoo and some circuses)
Mallard x Northern Pintail (Wild)
Green Sawfish (Shedd Aquarium, SEA LIFE Minnesota)
Goitered Gazelle (Minnesota Zoo)
Greater Grison (Timbavati Wildlife Park)

After visiting Ouwehands I can probably safely say I'm one of the few ZooChatters to have seen the short-tailed spotted cuscus :p

Indeed, a rarely seen species and, according to ZooTierListe, the only one currently in Europe.

I've never visited Ouwehands but I saw the same individual when it was at the Rare Species Conservation Centre.

And there must be several UK ZooChat members (myself included) who saw the species at Twycross Zoo back in the 1980s.

Wow, that's a LOOOONG time ago. I don't really think of the 19s when I think of what's rare, since I wasn't even born in that time. Just looked the former holdings up on ZooTierListe, and it seems like it has been kept several times in the past. Never knew that! I imagine several of the ''older'' people here can then also put that animal on their lists.

I'd imagine quite a lot of Zoochatters have seen the species. There are no fewer than seven members with photos of this species in the galleries, for example.

If I remember well,I saw a Mona monkey in an European zoo some months ago.
Also,I've seen a Kagu in Berlin zoo

Whoops:oops: I forgot to mention what may be one of my rarest species:
Angolan/ malbrouk vervet - Monte selvagem
I didn’t expect a 65%! I thought it would be something like 90%:D
