NO red river belongs in captivity including our own which is why they will be off next year to congo to be safely rewilded :)

If no red river hogs belong in captivity, then why the hell did you literally just state that they are being held right now by you. If their still going off to the congo, then why do have them in the first place?? :p:p

because they have been with us for many many years secondly it takes a lot of time to actually find rewilding projects but we have started the process which i am so happy about.
I have only in last few years clarified my thoughts re animals in captivity for years i thought i was doing some good until i realised it wasn't quite what it seemed .
 
@Damian Aspinall I noticed earlier in the week one of your head keepers joined the site recently by the way, the head of staff of animal staff Port Lympne, Simon Jeffreys was his name I believe.

He seemed to be paying a lot of attention to the thread I posted with your mongabay interview.

I assume he was doing some reading up before you made your appearance on here ?
 
Mr @Damian Aspinall, most of us know you won’t change your mind and you won’t change others minds on this topic. What is the reason to come onto a zoo forum other than to debate? I don’t think that any point made will actually affect you in a way that you will have the slightest change in your mindset. Same way goes for people who have certain political views or religious beliefs, what is the point to hammer in ideals or want others to convince you of a certain ideal or point when you know where you stand? This conversation won’t go anywhere, sir. Points have been made already of what zoos have done and yet have to see an actual admittance of the work done on in-situ conservation. The mere presence of you wanting others to change your mind or make points you’ll actually digest is a mere facade. If you have problems with zoos, take it to the zoos themselves and see what you get. But the very fact you are on here trying to see if anyone will actually change your mind or prove you wrong in any singular point is an uphill battle no one will win or that you will win with anyone on here. Please just go on about your day and let us have our forum. You will not gain any new knowledge or talking point. Just admit that the sole reason for you to have even created an account is nothing more to have chicken necking fights. We have our stances and so do you, I wholeheartedly think you won’t have ever changed your stances and this is just inflammatory at the least. Life is too damn short to spend an entire day arguing or debating the existence of zoos. Take your issues to the main source and not a forum. You will be better off mentally as well as us having not have this argument. Zoos are essential and unless an “act of God” were to spontaneously reverse this modern day mass extinction that is going on, zoos are here to stay and the work they do is what has allowed some species to not face extinction. Have a good day.

I respect that is your view and i have no problem with that except that you are wrong and blinded..
saying that i am sure you love nature and wildlife. we agree to disagree
 
Zoos do need to look at themselves critically, much of what Damien has written is correct. We should be working to improve zoos and make them centres that drive conservation in the wild, not shutting them down. It is only in zoos we can learn some of the hand's on techniques that are so important for managing wild populations.

Sir, the fact you replied as you did is the same point I already made about what you are doing on this site. Be civil, move on with your life, stop trying to incite arguments/fights, and stop ignoring the points already made by others. The mere fact you can’t admit that zoos have saved species that would be extinct if it weren’t for zoos shows the egotistical stance you are having and proved that you came on this forum to get people heated about something they love and some work in these places you abhorrently disagree with. Go take your fight to the zoos themselves if you truly want to make any sort of opinion change or change to their institution. I want to go on about my day and not further argue with you, sir. Hopefully you can understand that this fight won’t get you anywhere except where you started. Be an adult and move on from here, nothing will be won. Take care.

Well of course, thats what a lot of zoos are trying to do. And the best thing to do is try, and @Damian Aspinall needs to appreciate what zoos have done and hopefully will do in the future. Your opinions might change in time.

You do realise who Carl Jones is don't you ?

You are talking to one of the most successful conservationists in the world who prevented the extinction of three species on Mauritius.

He is a professor at the Durrell trust at Jersey zoo and has been instrumental in pioneering captive breeding programes for endangered birds and bats.

You are still young but trust me really this is definitely a case of respect your elders.
