3- The Zoo take over the whole conservation programme called HELP CONGO which was run previously by a NGO with the same name. At the beginning this programme was created to protect chimpanzees in the Conkouati-Douli national park but now has expanded to biodiversity protection and scientific research.
The main missions will be now :
- monitoring and management of chimpanzees on the Sanctuary Islands,
- possibility of reintroduction in the park of chimps born in these islands,
- census of the park’s extraordinary biodiversity: leopards, forest elephants, gorillas, manatees, eagles, hornbills, leatherback turtles, etc. with various methods (environmental DNA, trap cameras, etc.),
- specific programmes on species to be defined on the basis of the biodiversity census which has been carried out,
- protection of part of the park (the Triangle, 3000 hectares) thanks to the guardians and in collaboration with the park rangers,
- support to local communities at the socio-economic level,
- development of educational programmes for species conservation,
- eco-tourism projects,
- participation in the park conservation strategy in collaboration with its manager, the french NGO Noé.
