Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

A few notes from my visit today

Monsoon forest is open but you can only see the rhinoceros hornbills orangutans and gibbons the sulawesi macaques and gharials are closed off

Saw the blesbok

Fruit bat forest is now open so now the cattle house is now the only closed indoor area

The tenrec are no longer in the collection and their enclosure in fruit bat forest is now occupied by Turkish spiny mice

Tropical realm is still closed and so are the walk through aviaries

Not like pele the old male black jaguar old she was 9 so she was in her prime still but she was a stunningly beautiful jaguar I hope napo is doing OK and they can find him a new mate so my dream for jaguar cubs isn't dead

I must have been thinking of Pele. Thanks for the information.

At least one set of cubs was born in the 70\80s in the old enclosure which was on the site where anteaters are now

Have Chester had any success breeding jaguar?
No, no cubs born to Goshi x Napo or the previous pair, Sofia and Salvador.

There were two unsuccessful litters in the mid 2000’s.

I was told Napo is unable to breed.

They didn’t want him and Goshi to breed due to her young age, so rather than risk her becoming infertile from contraceptive drugs; applied them to Napo instead. It unfortunately rendered him sterile.

A real shame, considering Napo is more genetically valuable than Goshi was.

Just heard the very sad news that the wonderful female jaguar Goshi has died suddenly.

Devastating news. :( My condolences are with the team that cared for her and the Chester locals that loved her dearly.

She was one of the most beautiful melanistic Jaguars I personally have ever seen.

RIP Goshi (2012-2022)

Presumably we can expect a press release soon from Chester Zoo confirming the news and sharing more details.

Deaths in Jaguar of this age are rare outside of introductions and given their close and long standing relationship, I’m not expecting this to have been an injury from Napo; but rather something medical related.

Is Napo likely to stay at Chester considering his infertility?

I wouldn’t bet on it - the last time Chester publicly announced an animal death was September 2020, and in recent years they’ve only ever announced Elephant deaths. It tends to be that deaths, arrivals (apart from new species), and departures don’t get announced, and, in the absence of annual holdings lists being published, the only way these things can be found out are via word of mouth or occasionally on the Channel 4 series.

I would say it’s a strong possibility he could be retired to another holder with less adequate facilities and a new pair brought in to breed at Chester Zoo.

Although there’s not been a huge number of breeding recommendations given over the last decade, Chester Zoo held the studbook last I heard and would presumably be keen to breed.

Chester do hold the studbook, and with one of the greatest Jaguar complexes in the world, i'd imagine they'd be very keen to breed them again. They haven't breed them successfully this century, although they have been trying for a very long time.
