Zoochat Challenge North America 2022

If we had more NYC members it would be interesting to see how quick they could assemble some species for this
Add in time getting from trains to station entrances, waiting in lines, dealing with crowds, likely switching trains at points... you could possibly do 2 of the zoos in one day, *maybe* three if you lucked out on all of those things, were a fast walker and in great shape, etc.

Yeah, with NYC I was thinking about the trains. It's a very efficient transportation network, but it's not as easy as driving from point A to point B; getting from one single part of the city to another can take hours, especially crossing into different boroughs (which you'd have to for zoos, since there's one per borough). It's certainly possible for someone who lives in NYC to do each zoo as a separate day trip... but as has been pointed out, most NYC zoo visitors on the forum are actually from outside the city and have to commute in.

Plus, most people living in NYC don't own a car, which I can't imagine would be anything but a handicap for this challenge... even if you lived in one of the densest zoo regions in the country.

out of curiosity, would house mouse work as a wild card mammal? I'm guessing not but figured I should ask.

How dare you try to sully my Steve Irwin with your common barnyard rodents :p

House mouse does not count because it isn't native to Oceania. The loophole is that one animal can be found naturally outside of Oceania, but it still has to also be found naturally inside Oceania.

TinoPup Namesake Challenge 0/1

So that makes 11/36 challenges completed, with only 4 not started at all. Seriously surprised that I've been to two aquariums and so far not seen a single sign of an octopus yet. Also no flamingos or Meerkats!

~Thylo

Not going to post the whole list again here for one addition but @jayjds2 kindly reminded me of part of why I love National Aquarium so much:

Bona Fide Rarity Hunter 3/3
3) Kimberley Snake-Necked Turtle, Chelodina walloyarrina

For anyone unaware, the aquarium has a large collection of rare Australian and South American turtles, of which at least half a dozen are kept no where else in the country. I somehow forgot this :p

Let this be a lesson for me to not try to use my phone on something like this…

I rarely make posts from my phone for that very reason :p but no worries, I was just making sure you had everything straight.

Yak (Bos grunniens) - Southwick's Zoo (4/9/22)
Vinegaroon (Thelyphonida) - Southwick's Zoo (4/9/22)
Domestic Yak and vinegaroon (an unspecified species nonetheless) do not count for the challenge.

Thylo is correct. I will sometimes allow counts on the genus level depending on the situation (especially for arachnids), but Thelyphonida is an order and not one that qualifies anyway. The no domestics rule is a little complicated this year - I still need to get back to people on whether things like budgerigars and mouflon count - but Yak is pretty safely out.
