Saint Louis Zoo Saint Louis Zoo News 2022

Does anybody who has been to the zoo recently know if Zeya the newer tiger is out on exhibit yet.
I emailed the Zoo yesterday with this exact question. I've been told I could hear back as early as tomorrow. I also asked if the Puma is gone, as I have not seen it on exhibit since last year and the Serval is in its former habitat.

There is a new building being constructed behind the Caribbean Cove Ray Encounter. It's been under construction since before Christmas, but the last time I went, there's been a lot of new permanent walls and supports put up for it. Wondering what this could be. It doesn't seem that large so I don't know if it's just infrastructure or if any new species will be put on display. The zoo has not made any sort of public announcements about it yet, but I would be surprised if nothing new happened relatively soon, as it's probably going to need to be ready before April or May for the change back to the summer weather schedule and crowd.

The Pumas are officially gone at Saint Louis. Our last one was humanely euthanized due to age complications in December. Confirmed by our carnivore curator.

Does the zoo plan on acquiring more cougars? Or would that come with a full renovation of Big Cat Country?

I also want to know what happened to their old breeding male Dexter?
Not sure what exactly happened to Dexter but his last offspring was born in 2010.
I know that Dexter was alive as of December 31st 2011, but that's it.
There's no information online about him being at other zoos, so it appears he may have passed.
Dexter passed away on November 6th, 2012 at the age of 23.

One of the giraffes looks to be a different subspecies. I imagine it’s Zoomix something or other, but it looks more like a Southern Giraffe than a reticulated by its pattern

If a giraffe in North America is not Masai, it is a Retic x Roth/Nubian hybrid of some degree. There is only, potentially, a very small handful of purebred animals of either of those species left, and they are being managed as a single generic population. All of St. Louis’s giraffe are this generic hybrid mix.

I do not think it has been reported anywhere, but there is a young Soemmerring's gazelle calf on exhibit with the herd in Red Rocks.
Just reported on the Twitter page for the Zoo:
“We are adding a handsome Chex to the mix! Welcome Chex, our newest Soemmerring's gazelle! He was born at the Zoo this past winter to mother gazelle Cheerio and father gazelle Nemo. When the weather cooperates, guests can find him with the rest of the herd in Red Rocks.”
