I have done some research on reindeer/caribou populations, hybridization, and presence in Alaska which leads me to conclude that the Siberian Tundra reindeer in captivity are domesticated forms of this subspecies, possibly with Norwegian genetics. This link identifies the reindeer in San Diego as originating from stock in Alaska and I'm assuming that Cougar Mountain Zoo's reindeer are somehow related to the animals in San Diego. Based on other papers I've studied, Asian reindeer in Alaska are domestic reindeer shipped from the Russian Chukchi Peninsula by a few ambitious businessmen and somewhat strangely, a priest. At one point, the Alaskan farmers used domestic Norwegian males for breeding purposes, as well.Reindeer, Siberian Tundra

So, not really Rangifer tarandus valentinae // R. fennicus valentinae after all?I have done some research on reindeer/caribou populations, hybridization, and presence in Alaska which leads me to conclude that the Siberian Tundra reindeer in captivity are domesticated forms of this subspecies, possibly with Norwegian genetics. I was reading about this for another project, but thought it was worth mentioning here because these animals are domesticated. I don't think they were meant to be an exception to the omission of domestic animal groups, but could be wrong.
They were never believed to be valentinae from what I've seen on ZooChat, but rather sibiricus. This matches up with what I've learned. The one difference is that these reindeer are a domesticated form of sibiricus. So, not really Rangifer tarandus valentinae // R. fennicus valentinae after all?
I started my America zootour today and I was surprised to see 5 giant elend including one male at Miami Zoo. I thought this might be interesting here as People with ZIMS access did write in former comments they have only 0.3 left. The Other 2 may have arrived recently?
Too bad to read it's castrated, I hoped for a chance that the species will be bred thereOne, the castrated male, arrived recently, from San Diego. The fourth female arrived sometime in the last year, I believe.
