Misidentified Animals

I went to this petting zoo and the keepers there called their Ring-tailed lemurs monkeys. I assume they did that because "monkey" would have been an easier term for visitors to understand. However, I wish the facility would have taken a step toward educating its visitors and at least using the term "lemur", even if that is not the name of the species.

I've heard a vet call a RTL a monkey. The lemur's owner said the same thing.

Considering that you are in Japan I wouldn’t be too shocked to hear people omit the “fox” from “fox monkeys”.

A couple of times recently I have heard people saying that different species in adjacent enclosures are adults and babies.

The first was in Beale Wildlife Park's nocturnal house a few weeks ago. Someone said that the slender loris were the adult bushbabies and the mouse lemurs were the young. Today at Marwell someone said that the binturongs were the adults and their neighbours, the cusimanses were the babies.

Until recently they were considered the same species, so this is less incorrect and more being a case of using outdated taxonomy. Although I do understand there is probably some national pride going on here. ;)

Yes, especially as they are the national bird of Japan. I also personally think that green pheasants look better than common pheasants, but that is simply my opinion.
