While at SeaWorld San Diego I saw a child point to a white sturgeon and exclaim, "It's a dolphin!"
Are these Humboldts or Magellanics? I find it hard to tell those two apart occasionally, although I can see these are most definitely not African!
Those are Magellanics. They have an black stripe between their mask and abdominal stripe. Their beak also lacks a fleshy base unlike what Humboldts’ have. Are these Humboldts or Magellanics? I've heard a vet call a RTL a monkey. The lemur's owner said the same thing.I went to this petting zoo and the keepers there called their Ring-tailed lemurs monkeys. I assume they did that because "monkey" would have been an easier term for visitors to understand. However, I wish the facility would have taken a step toward educating its visitors and at least using the term "lemur", even if that is not the name of the species.
Considering that you are in Japan I wouldn’t be too shocked to hear people omit the “fox” from “fox monkeys”.I went to this petting zoo and the keepers there called their Ring-tailed lemurs monkeys. Until recently they were considered the same species, so this is less incorrect and more being a case of using outdated taxonomy. Although I do understand there is probably some national pride going on here.It just irritates me when people look at Phasianus Versicolor, and call them Phasianus Colchicus.
