Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2023

First visit today for a long while, but hope to be back more often. Noticed that there was a lot of work being prepped by the Bush Dog enclosure, and the walkway behind by the Yellow-throated martens was closed off.

Saw the new little heritage area near the Giraffes, with the props used back in the Chimps Tea Party / PG Tips days, which was very interesting.

Questions for those more familiar with Twycross, are the chimps a breeding group? And which of the great apes are due a new house next, is it the Orangs?
The chimps have non-castrated males but aren’t breeding and haven’t had any young in years. In the main group there is the males: Jambo, Flynn, Jomar, and Kibali. The females are Coco, Genet (both chocolate chimps), Sammantha, Holly, Josie, Victoria and Tuli.

The next great ape to get a refurbish from remembering the 2030 plan when it was on the website was “Orangutan Phase One” but plans can change very quickly.

Victoria was born at Twycross in 1988 and hand reared by Molly but I can't remember her parents. Tuli was also born at Twycross in 2010 and her parents were Benjie and Mwekundu. Josie I believe was born at Dudley Zoo.

When I used to be a volunteer, there were a lot more Chimps then and I could tell the difference between all of them.

I used to have a list of all of them from studbook numbers, to place of birth, parents, offspring etc but sadly lost it.
Thanks for the information !

Do you know which page I can find Twycross on? I don’t have much time to find them in the 300 pages haha.
Pages 88-89 show the list of chimpanzees in Twycross at that time. There is also a search function so that way you can search the document for the information you need.

The Zoos are listed in alphabetical order so you just need to scroll through to the 'T's to find Twycross. All studbooks operate like that.

Had a quick visit today and they are completely fencing off the area in front of the bushdogs spoke to a worker who said it will be developed but no plans as to when and that the bushdogs are still there but I would have thought they will be certainly off show now, I suppose with it being fenced off (similar to where the otter were)it stops visitors saying it’s another empty enclosure …

Is there a few more chimps on that list ?

Brining Twycross and the chimps to 6.6.
Twycross would mix Peter and Tommy into Jambos troop but Peter won’t agree to Jambo being alpha.
