Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2023

I spent a couple of hours at the zoo today, and was delighted to see the adorable baby black rhino and it's mum despite the poor weather. Here's a few images.

I think my favourite image I got was this one. Mum and baby nose to nose, so affectionate :)

Lovely pics. Rhino calves are such fun.

Great to know it is easily visible, I was wondering how well it could be seen as majority of the space is closed off. Might have to make a visit tomorrow while I'm in the area. :)

Glad you got such excellent shots! I only managed a short phone video first thing this morning.

These photos are absolutely adorable

She's managed three calves to date now (Embu, Ike and the current calf), a shame really considering Zuri is her first and likely only calf, have to wonder what Paignton's long-term plan is for their rhinos.

I think Sita(Zuri's mother) was left too long without breeding as the second/current bull they got from PL- not Zuri's father, wasn't proven and has not learned proper mating technique. So officially a few years ago she was 'retired' from breeding. I guess they will just remain as they are now unless PL reclaim their bull.

Does anyone know what number calf this is for Zuri? Have defo seen her with one other.

Her 3rd but 1st daughter.

Her first was in 2013 Embu (Magadi)
Her 2nd was in 2017 Ike (Kifaru)
Then last week's calf (Gabe we're presuming)

I presume that one of the off show things will move into the old Philippine spotted deer enclosure, anyone know what?

When I was there last week, the paddock was looking rather bare, and very muddy. It's at an area of the zoo, that water slopes down into and I would imagine that the PSD have been moved, so the paddock can recover and be rested. I don't know this for fact, but when I was there last week, I couldn't help but think the paddock needed a rest.
Given the old Bongo paddock (or Warthog paddock) is effectively on the HOF footprint, I would expect this move to be temporary and that they will move back to their normal exhibit in the spring.
I don't know this as fact, so don't take as gospel, but I would be surprised if something moved into where the PSD were as the paddock does need rest, and of course they share the Indian Rhino House, with another Deer as well, so if something else was put into that area, it would need to be compatible on that front to.

To play devil’s advocate - the new islands entrance passes by this paddock, so this may be a permanent move (or as permanent as exists at Chester) and an extension of Islands rather than a temporary use of land that will later be incorporated into HoA.

Yes the place they have moved to is the new paddock between the new island entrance path and the restaurant. This is a permanent move and had been planned for a while.

Indeed - the paddock now occupied by the deer is not the same footprint as the old one (though it does sit within it and if I recall is using the same stables?) and is not inside the Heart of Africa development area - it is on the new Islands entrance path and once the planting is established won't even be visible from Heart of Africa. :)

thanks for the heads up that’s great news , I never liked where they were before, couldn’t see them properly although you used to be able to access the little hut at the bottom which was a nice place to sit and watch them
We recently went to Newquay zoo, the enclosure there for the Philippine spotted deer is excellent
