What next for the bucket list?

I've seen lots of people describe there being "four kinds of great ape". This really confuses me - why would you split out Chimpanzee and Bonobo but not the gorillas and orangutans?
At least when I was younger, chimpanzee and bonobo were recognized as separate species already, while orangutan and gorilla were still generally considered to be a single species each, with different subspecies (western lowland, eastern lowland, and mountain for gorilla, Bornean and Sumatran for orangutan). As a result, I often still think of there being four great apes, as opposed to three, or seven

I get more in-depth on my reply at the very end of page 1 but this is how I was taught it, how I would say most of the general population understand it, and in casual conversation like this thread is how I prefer to refer to it.

Obv in a more analytical setting it's worth discussing and considering all of the different species as individuals. On my bucket list I'm less picky... I just wanna just see "the big 4" broadly, not so in-the-weeds.

That is very simple to explain. Bonobos have a popular name of their own (despite also being called "pygmy chimpanzee"), unlike other species of great apes (e.g. "Tapanuli orangutan" or "Western gorilla").

I was going to have a trip to Chester Zoo before the end of the year but maybe early next year now. I also want to visit San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park sometime in 2025.

I just moved to smack-dab in the middle of a lot of AZA zoos so very excited to visit a lot of them for the first time! Looking forward to visiting Indianapolis Zoo and seeing their dolphin exhibit and also hoping to make it out to Toledo :)
