At least when I was younger, chimpanzee and bonobo were recognized as separate species already, while orangutan and gorilla were still generally considered to be a single species each, with different subspecies (western lowland, eastern lowland, and mountain for gorilla, Bornean and Sumatran for orangutan). As a result, I often still think of there being four great apes, as opposed to three, or sevenI've seen lots of people describe there being "four kinds of great ape". This really confuses me - why would you split out Chimpanzee and Bonobo but not the gorillas and orangutans?
