A welcome addition for sure! In theory, the current set up made sense from an immersion standpoint, but the long runway was a nightmare for animal management. You'd have individuals who would spend the whole day in the shoot sometimes if they didn't want to transfer out - creating a bottleneck for the rest of the herds who never ended up on exhibit. Looking forward to seeing the final results!

The zoo has announced that gentoo penguin Bridget has passed away at the remarkable age of 37. The average lifespan for gentoo penguins in the wild is around 15 years, so Bridget enjoyed a very long life for her species. She'll be dearly missed.

Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium on Instagram: "The Zoo is mourning the loss of Bridget, a 37-year-old gentoo penguin who captured hearts with her special story and custom wetsuit. The difficult decision was made to euthanize Bridget on December 4 following a decline in health due to her advanced age. Her long life is a testament to the exceptional care provided by the Zoo’s animal care and veterinary health teams. Bridget arrived at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium in 2017. As one of the oldest penguins in the colony, Bridget was known for her spunkiness and beloved by Zoo staff for her “spicy, get-off-my-lawn” personality. Due to age-related spinal issues, Bridget was unable to preen properly and needed extra help in waterproofing her feathers. To keep Bridget warm and cozy, senior animal care specialist Whitney crafted a penguin-sized protective wetsuit that allowed her to continue enjoying the water and snow. Bridget’s story was shared thousands of times on social media and connected with people around the world. Many guests came to visit Bridget at the Zoo, where she inspired visitors to learn about her species and the conservation efforts to protect her wild counterparts. She will be dearly missed by all.
