Is there any actual evidence to link fireworks to the death? - other than just the timing perhaps, and a 'belief'.
In the statement the zoo put out about Roxie's death, they said their vet team determined stress from the noise was the most likely cause. Granted, losing her mother five days earlier probably didn't help either. Is there any actual evidence to link fireworks to the death? - other than just the timing perhaps, and a 'belief'.
Agreed, I find it absolutely baffling. Also when zoos run events late after closing times, lanturns etc, often accompanied by bright lighting and music. Usually against the wishes of the keepers. It always amazes me when zoos themselves have firework displays - it would be hard to enforce near zoos if all zoos didn’t follow this.

This is absolutely awful to hear, I unfortunately didn't get to see Roxie on my last visit, but from what I've seen she was such a lovely little baby and it upsets me that she died so early and in such an awful way.
I hear a lot of stories like this every November about people's pets dying of fright because of the fireworks. While I do think there should be some tighter legislation on the sale and use of them, fireworks are still a centuries old tradition that brings communities together, so I don't see the public taking any increased restrictions on them very well, and there definitely would be fierce push-back if it happens.
Whenever I see a post on Facebook about how fireworks affect animals or a post about someone's pet being scared to death, there's always one person in the comments who's like "UM WELL ACTUALLY YOU'RE WRONG" and "Just let people enjoy things you bloody Karens!"
Devils advocate, but as far as I am aware there’s never been any complaints about these sorts of events - while I agree any fireworks / loud music is a no no, as I’ve mentioned before when the zoo used to hold events like the giant lanterns etc it used to bring in money/positive publicity/engagement for the zoo.
I think that , at least in part - the Zoo should have been mindful because of the fireworks and the loss of her mother and either isolated her someplace else and/or given a keeper authority to watch her at night on standby (the same way Alison used to do with the giant pandas, particularly Tian Tian during certain times).
Yes - it does seem a rather strange and vague comment by the Vet team, when full post-mortems would normally be done.
If no other animals in the collection were affected, given the other underlying issues, it could be as likely that the cub simply died from the same cause as its mother - especially given the timing.
Regards the loud music - do not other zoos like Yorkshire Wildlife Park hold pop concerts?
Are the markhor in the giant panda enclosure? There was a transport crate in the turkmenian markhor enclosure. Are these guys due to move on soon? Once they go, the zoo will hopefully prep the exhibit for the mysterious new species they’ve teased us about for months.
Took a stroll crisp autumn stroll around the zoo today and a few things to note.
Not animal related but the Gannet restaurant has been refurbed with a new kids soft play area within it.
- there’s a transport crate in the rhino enclosure at the top end suggesting Qabid’s move is happening rather soon.
- There was a female Asiatic lion in the smaller pen at the top of the enclosure. Jay was in the larger outside enclosure being very vocal. I didn’t know a female had arrived so I assume it will be announced in the coming days.
- There also is a new red panda called Priya in with Kevyn in the enclosure behind the penguins. She arrived from ZSL Whipsnade zoo last month. Both her and Kevyn were very active today. She also happens to be Bruce’s granddaughter (the male panda by the entrance) her mother was Ginger.
- Lucu the Sumatran tiger was in the smaller of the two enclosures with female Dharma no where to be seen. I know they rotate the two between the enclosures but they never seem to introduce them. Anyone know why?
- Theres a sign on Cleo the cheetah’s old enclosure saying something exciting is coming soon - hopefully some more cheetah!
- Saw the Drill male mate two of the females today so hopefully some young Drill soon.
- Hippo calf Haggis was inside with mum Gloria with dad Otto locked outside. Otto is yet to be introduced to Haggis. Mum and baby are doing well.
- No sign of either of the cassowary birds today are on my last visit. Signs were up for them but no sightings!
- Sun bear Babu was very active. Digging around the enclosure and climbing the structures outside. Seem’s comfortable enough given her diagnosis. Hopefully a while left in her!
- Akiko the pallas cat had access to both outside enclosures but only the former armadillo section inside. The former binturong part has a sign up saying something is coming. Perhaps binturongs could be returning soon.

overall, a very nice visit with the highlight being young Haggis and getting so close to Danling the Chinese Goral!
I think they zoo said this was a temp enclosure and would be moving elsewhere in the zoo. Unless these plans have now changedAre the markhor in the giant panda enclosure?
I would suppose the question now is where is Qabid going to ?Took a stroll crisp autumn stroll around the zoo today and a few things to note.

I remember hearing (I think it was said at the AGM meeting in June but I'm not sure) that another type of bear would be going in the old panda enclosure eventually.I think they zoo said this was a temp enclosure and would be moving elsewhere in the zoo. Unless these plans have now changed
The pair of warty pigs that were in the paddock across from the rhinoceros are actually a male and female.
- The male Visayan warty pigs have been moved from the enclosure next to the Indian Rhino to the enclosure the Cape Porcupines have just vacated
