Exotic Mammals in Australian Zoos

Dubbo Zoos Onagers are quite old now is there anymore in the country?

No, just the two males at Dubbo.

Information on each exotic mammal species held in Australian zoos (including the number of holders) can be found on the first page of this thread.

This is the relevant section on Persian onager:
Persian Onager (Equus hemionus onager) – two males at Western Plains Zoo

The remnant animals in Australia (now just two males) are descended from eight animals, these being 2.2 from Rotterdam Zoo (Netherlands) in 1979, and 1.3 from the USA in 1982. [I have seen several different versions of these numbers and dates - the ones I give were from an article released by the zoo itself]. The last female died in 2021.

does any one know where they went and what occupies their exhibit now ? Last time I saw them ; they were at the old elephant temple

One of them (Ras) was euthanised on medical grounds and the other (Storm) was transferred to Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

The space currently functions as a pop up activity hub. There are food stalls as well as a handful of animals:

From @Osedax:

In the back corner there is a small display area for a Short-beaked Echidna which I have been told is rotated with a pair of Elongated Tortoises, and on the table next to the echidna/tortoise exhibit is a setup for Spiny Leaf Insects.

In the future, a zoo train is planned to operate between two stations, one being on this site.

*Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) – Adelaide; Altina; Australian Walkabout Wildlife Park; Ballarat Wildlife Park; Caversham; Green Valley Farm; Gumbuya Park; Halls Gap; National Zoo; Oakvale; Symbio; Taronga; Tasmania Zoo; Wagga Wagga Zoo; Wings Wildlife Park; Zoodoo. [Farmed in Australia so undoubtably held on show in other small collections apart for the ones listed here]

*Fallow Deer (Dama dama) – Adelaide; Altina; Birdland Animal Park; Caversham; Cooberrie; Gorge Wildlife Park; Gumbuya Park; Halls Gap; Hunter Valley; Mansfield; Mogo; National Zoo; Taralga; Tasmania Zoo; Warrnambool Wildlife Encounters; Western Plains Zoo; Wildlife HQ; Zoodoo

I'm pretty sure Adelaide Zoo no longer keeps Fallow Deer or Alpaca since their closure of the farmyard petting area, where the deer used to live, and the barnyard where the alpacas used to live.

Does anyone know what happened to the ferrets at Adelaide Zoo?
If I remember correctly, there used to be a small vertical cagey enclosure for them in one of the "barns" back when the quokka contact area was still functioning. I can't find any pictures of them anywhere, nor anyone mentioning them. I believe they were signed as Black-Footed Ferrets, though I do doubt the accuracy of that.

*Brown-nosed (Common) Coati (Nasua nasua) – Adelaide; Melbourne

Melbourne Zoo no longer has Brown-nosed coati:

Some sad news as advised by @Mlawlor in the coati population thread (source being the Zoos Victoria news magazine) that Melbourne Zoo no longer has Brown-nosed coati; following the deaths of their two remaining females (Bahia and Japura).

*Black And White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata) – Altina; Darling Downs Zoo; Halls Gap; Hunter Valley; Melbourne; Mogo; National Zoo; Perth; Western Plains Zoo; Wildlife HQ

Tasmania Zoo now has Black and white ruffed lemur:

From Altina’s socials:

Altina sadly waves goodbye to 3 beautiful Black & White Ruffed Lemurs as they head to their news homes across the Pond!

Kintana, Ruffas Ragamuffin & Masoandro boarded a flight early yesterday morning to get to their news homes in Tasmania.

It’s been turned into another empty picnic area. Picnic tables and grass have been placed, and there’s a small stand that looks like it might serve drinks occasionally? It was closed when I went last Saturday (big surprise). Just another empty space at Taronga Zoo.

*Brown-nosed (Common) Coati (Nasua nasua) – Adelaide; Melbourne

There are no more Brown-nosed coati in Australia:

The last coati (a female named Samba) has died at Adelaide Zoo. Reported in the news thread by @That Aussie Guy.

Thanks to @Patrick Keegan for the update that Darling Downs Zoo are working on an import of nine coati to revive the Australian population of this species.

*Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) – Australia Zoo; Melbourne; Monarto; Perth; Sydney Zoo; Taronga; Western Plains Zoo

Taronga Zoo no longer has elephants:

Taronga Zoo’s last two elephants (Pak Boon and Tang Mo) have left Taronga Zoo to take up residence at Monarto Safari Park, marking a phase out of this species by the zoo.

Reported on socials.
