Chester Zoo Chester Zoo news 2025

There should be a copy in the Whipsnade Zoo Staff Library
I'm sure there is a copy in the ZSL Library too.

EDIT I've just checked the online Library Catalogue and can confirm there is a copy of John Frost's hippo book in the ZSL Library.

This is the main thing I'd be interested in knowing about the African Forest development, which non-African species in the Tropical Realm are staying at or leaving the collection. There are so many great species in there that it would be a shame to lose.

Please for God's sake don't quote me on this, but I think the intent was at least to move the Madagascan species over to Dragons in Danger and make a Madagascar-themed building, moving the Komodos and other Indonesian species over to Islands.

Again, I think that's why they might be doing it in phases, because, unlike with HOA, you have many more animals to consider.

It was a plan some years ago.

This should now give Chester five Roloway Monkeys in total - and this is the first birth of this species at Chester to this new troop.
I think this may be the birth that was mentioned in last year's news thread in June. Good to see it announced and the youngster named though.

The baby is already several months old and fully active here.. I also saw a video of them a few weeks back and counted five in the group which would include the new one. Strange if they have only announced it nearly a year(?) after the birth but I guess they are 'pushing' her for Easter visitors..

Pictures on Facebook confirm that the Bat Eared Foxes are now on show, albeit with the viewing window partly obscured while they settle in.

To add to my earlier post, there is also a barrier in place stopping anyone going right up to the viewing window for the foxes. It sounds like they were getting stressed due to kids banging loudly on the glass on their first day on show, so the zoo has put a barrier in place whilst they settle in. I just thought this should be added in case anyone is planning a visit specifically to see them - they are visible, but it sounds like a very restricted view for the moment!

Tricolor Parrot Finches (Erythrura tricolor) have bred.

New species for Chester, Namib Sand Gecko (Pachydactylus rangei)

Returning to Chester, Fischer's Turaco (Tauraco fischeri)
Amazing news about the sand geckos Rob, are they on display?
They are an iconic and unique lizard and are the only ones in captivity according to ZTL. As well as this they have only been kept by two other institutions (one being London) :)
