Does anyone know when San Antonio's new Asian Elephant exhibit plans to open, they just finished on their gorilla habitat, has anyone found an intended completion date?
The Columbus Zoo is asking for name suggestions for Phoebe's calf. Keeper staff will pick their top four names and then guests will be able to vote on them. The winning name will be announced December 2nd.

I have a feeling that we will see a number of "Jack"s as wellI submitted Pumpkin!
Well I'm glad this calf won't be donor named! I'll be interested to see which four names they end up selecting. Of course, a traditional name honoring the Asian heritage would be nice. Even better if it's a 'P' name! The Columbus Zoo is asking for name suggestions for Phoebe's calf. Keeper staff will pick their top four names and then guests will be able to vote on them. Going off of Pumpkin, I submitted the name Labu, meaning Pumpkin in Malay, tying into the month he was born, as well as his sire's name SabuI submitted Pumpkin!
I submitted Virgil because first of all its certainly an older name, much like Frankie and Rita Jean, and sounds great off the tongue when you say all three together, and second for the connection to an ancient Roman poet, similar to a Greek figure where "Phoebe" comes from. The Columbus Zoo is asking for name suggestions for Phoebe's calf. I submitted for “Jack” in honor of Jack Hanna, although Virgil and Labu are also great suggestions!
You know about the controversy associated with Jack Hanna, right?
Not until now, when did the controversies begin? You know about the controversy associated with Jack Hanna, right?
But choose to forget the scandal.
They shouldn't. He was quite happy to associate with shady people and lie to the public about where those animals came from and what would happen to them after they made the talk show circuit.
(He also advocated for disposing of surplus animals via public auctions, by the way.)
especially with the baby big cats!!!!!!!! Horrible.
Think it's going to be a hard fought battle to change public opinion of him, at least in Columbus. A bit of Michael Jackson syndrome going on there imo.
I'll be curious to see if the keepers choose it, it's the most popular suggestion by far due to its dual association with Halloween and Jack Hannah. The zoo still speaks of him in positive regard for the most part despite the controversy and the general public either ignores or doesn't know about the controversy.Columbus Zoo could help that along by not naming their newest elephant calf after him.
