Well I'm glad this calf won't be donor named! I'll be interested to see which four names they end up selecting. Of course, a traditional name honoring the Asian heritage would be nice. Even better if it's a 'P' name!

I was searching for 'P' names and stumbled across 'Phoenix'. Whilst not a choice that jumps out to me initially, I like the fact that it follows this mother's name phonetically, and also the meaning - Phoenix obviously representing re-birth/new life (which could serve as a symbol of Columbus's rejuvenated breeding program).

I submitted Virgil because first of all its certainly an older name, much like Frankie and Rita Jean, and sounds great off the tongue when you say all three together, and second for the connection to an ancient Roman poet, similar to a Greek figure where "Phoebe" comes from.

They shouldn't. He was quite happy to associate with shady people and lie to the public about where those animals came from and what would happen to them after they made the talk show circuit.

(He also advocated for disposing of surplus animals via public auctions, by the way.)

especially with the baby big cats!!!!!!!! Horrible.

Think it's going to be a hard fought battle to change public opinion of him, at least in Columbus. A bit of Michael Jackson syndrome going on there imo.

I'll be curious to see if the keepers choose it, it's the most popular suggestion by far due to its dual association with Halloween and Jack Hannah. The zoo still speaks of him in positive regard for the most part despite the controversy and the general public either ignores or doesn't know about the controversy.
Almost no need to do a follow-up contest if it's one of the final four.

However there are quite a few popular suggestions that are less than good choices, so perhaps the keepers will feel comfortable ignoring the masses. I've seen several Franks, Pickles, etc. :p

I wonder if they already made it a policy not to name any animals Jack. I saw on the Facebook thread that someone wanted to name the calf Buckeye but there is a bear already called Buckeye.

I do not think any keeper at the zoo would pick Jack if they have personal knowledge of went on. After all the scandal is fairly recent so it is not forgotten.
