San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo News 2012

The zoo has come up with a blog post of what is now being kept down the hill of the panda's. They have put a pair of babirusa's with a lowland anoa and right next door is 6 visayan warty pigs

They have moved the babirusas and the lowland anoa and the visayan warty pigs from their original exhibits because those exhibits have been torn down. They have taken out the exhibits from the meerkats to the hairy-nose wombat on the corner of Urban Jungle. That area will now be part of the Australian exhibits. They moved the red river hogs who used to be in the exhibits by the pandas in with the forest buffalo in Ituri Forest.

Like to hear more how the experiment babirusa and anoa is going ... :D

Do they have any plans to add something new there?

I uploaded some pictures of the construction happening at the zoo.

Today as part of absolutely apes weekend the zoo celebrated Janey the orangutans 50 birthday. The zoo describes Janey as the "artist" out of all their orangutans for her fondness of painting.

Do they still have the yellow-backed duikers in their exhibit?

They have replaced them for quite some time. The exhibit is even a little greener with them there instead of bearded pigs.

Are Malayan Tapirs still in Tiger River? They were off-exhibit for quite some time in January.

Thanks, Otter Lord I wasn't sure how to answer that question. I saw the tapirs in Tiger River yesterday. I also saw the 2 new baby takins both born within the last 2 weeks. The male red panda (Flynn) is now sharing the exhibit with the female (Lily). I am hoping for baby red pandas. I also discovered the the entrance to the Galapagos Tortoise is closed because they are removing the old indoor exhibits across from the tortoises. Does any one have information on those exhibits? I am going to miss them as they were my kids and now my grandkids favorite. I will upload a few pictures I took yesterday of the demolition.

I am not an animal expert but I can give you my uneducated observations. The babirusas came from the Los Angeles zoo about a year ago I think. They have been with the anoa since they arrived. They are very young and have very small tusks. The anoa is a 14 year old female. I was watching them interact recently, the anoa would put her head down and make the babirusa move. They quickly got out of her way. That was the first time I had seen any interaction they usually ignore each other. :)

I remember that being closed off when I went in January but I forgot about it. Those buildings have been slated for demolition for quite some time, at least since 2003. Their reptile enclosures are quite old and the reptile department has been anticipating newer facilities. I know they are going to be demolished, but I figured they would replace those exhibits with something newer. Its a shame if they don't; there are a lot of rare species in those buildings.

I have very sad news. The zoo's breeding male bonobo, Yenge, died on Tuesday morning. They believe he suffered a heart attack. I have not seen any official announcement from the zoo but a volunteer told me on Thursday.

What is happening with the Galapagos tortoise anyways?
Have they now created breeding compositions of true (sub-)species with them ... acknowledging that SD Zoo had perhaps 3-4 different genetic groups in their collection????

if I remember right (?) they also put protective caps over the horns of the anoa for a period. That minimized the risk of injured and dead babirusa in the introductory phase.

Very sad.:(

It turns out that the entire Australian Outback section where the exhibits were knocked down will be improved. There will be new and improved koala habitats, complete with a care center with windows spanning from the ceiling to the floor so the visitors can watch zookeepers tend to the koalas. Exhibits for Tasmanian Devils and a variety of Australian birds are planned to be added later on.

Where did you get this news?

I can't speak for where AnaheimZoo got the news, but there are several signs about the new exhibits coming posted on the construction walls at the zoo, complete with conceptual drawings. They announce on the signs that new exhibits for Tasmanian devils, wombats, and other unannounced Aussie species are coming along with the koalas.

I have uploaded pictures of the signs to the gallery. The zoo is participating in a keeper exchange program with an Australian zoo. One thing their keeper did was help with moving the koalas into the holding areas behind the Sabertooth grill. We also had a botanist spend 6 months over there last year, he brought back native plants.
