Not as exciting as the new arrivals, but 3 male Vicuna have left the collection and gone to Trotters World of Animals in the Lake District.

Leaving just 0.3 now? Hope they aren't going out of them, I have something of a soft spot for them!

Maybe plans are in place for a new male? The males that have left are they the ones that were born in 2011? It would be obvious to move them on.

I believe the offspring from 2011 were 2.0, with another 0.0.1 not making it... As of yesterday there were still 3.3

Spent a nice couple of hours yesterday in the butterfly house
There was an excellent range of species on show including lots of heliconius butterflies

From Chester's Facebook...

BREAKING NEWS: We are absolutely delighted to announce that Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will officially open our NEW Diamond Jubilee Quarter on Thursday 17th May

Now that is very cool news, but what is the Diamond jubilee quarter?

I'm no particular royalist, but it does rather warm the cockles to see Chester's perennial favourite 'non-zoo' word 'Jubilee' making another appearance.

(see also Jubilee the elephant, Jubilee cafeteria, Jubilee Square, Jubilee Square Station, etc)

I've said 'Jubilee' too many times. It's gone weird...

I'm a republican, but that's one hell of a coup for my favourite zoo !!

:)

Now that explains Tim's sudden change of date for the walk and talk, time for the zoo to do the last minute panicking!!

There's nothing "last minute" about this visit, it's been in the works for months. Why do you think the huge gates at the new entrance have "1952" on them? The date is irrelevant to the history of the zoo.

At least the last time the Duke visited members and supporters had a chance of seeing him, this time we'll probably get no nearer than Chester city centre.

I think zg's point was that there will likely be a lot going on in the zoo that close to the visit. No-one suggested the visit itself was last minute.

Mark Carwardine was reluctant to take part ;)

maybe he lived in fear of a similar incident to the 'Kakapo Event' :D

I'm really looking forward to it personally - and purely speculation but also granting Royal Patronage in her Diamond Jubilee year would be very fitting - the "Royal North of England Zoological Society" has a nice ring to it!!

I can understand that as you'll get to be there, I remember the excitement when Prince Andrew opened Monkey Islands.

Unfortunately times (and management) change, and the more I hear about this visit the more the whole thing concerns me, not least in terms of the huge amount of money it's costing.

Aha! I had wondered about 1952 (we need a lightbulb emoticon).
Speaking personally, I will to let HM enjoy her visit without my company. I waved a very wet paper union jack at her in 1957 and glimpsed her glove waving back. The experience extinguished my appetite for royal visits.

Surprise surprise, something else the sponging Windsors aren't contributing to. Come the revolution etc etc

I remember HRH was on the front cover of the Chester Zoo news, in the Tropical house with Mottie(George Mottershead). Was he opening the tropical house then? Or has he been since?
