When the Javan tiger was endangered the suggestion was made to catch some and keep them in zoos, but that was vetoed in favour of preserving them in the wild. Now they are all extinct.
The Sammatron tiger is nearly extinct in the wild, as is the indian lion, with only a few hundred left of each. But if they died out completely through man's intervention we will still have them alive in captivity.

It's a very short sighted view that all wild animals should be kept in the wild, and anyone who believes that is a fool.

Is it better to keep Sumatran tigers captive in an enclosure, leading a life of being fed dead turkeys etc, selective breeding, constantly moving them between zoos?
Just so the public can gawp at them.

You think so....I dont think so.

My interpretation of wild animal is one that lives as nature intended..


i.e. not locked up and fed by humans



Do species go extinct without human intervention?

It sure is when the alternative is extinct. All but two of the Sumatran tigers in zoos today were bred in captivity, the two exceptions were two orphan cubs that would have died in the wild.

There are around 300 or so Sumatran tigers in captivity. If they were to be put back into the wild most of them would die very quickly, through starvation, fights with other tigers already there, and human intervention.

Animals are not kept in zoos just so humans can gawk at them, for many zoos involved in conservation the fees paid by the public enable them to keep the animals. Most zoos are heavily into conservation, and in the case of tigers if the situation in the wild improved, or if the wild tigers were wiped out, the species would not be doomed.

The anti zoo brigade are very closed mind about this, and can't see it no matter how carefully it is explained. I'd definitely put you in that group.

So in the end , every species, except clever man, will be in zoos?

Maybe the tiger population declined because a certain race of humans decided they will use the body parts for medicines.[not to mention killing them for fun]

Do the non anti zoo brigade do anything about the Chinese keeping bears in cages for "medicine" extraction,or skinning dogs alive?

Its not just about rare species you know.


My point is........its the human race that has been and still is responsible for decline in most species of animal population
 
could we keep the thread to the topic at hand please? The above is a worthy topic of conversation but deserves a thread of it's own, not wedged into this one.

Your point seems to be that because some members of the human race are responsible for the decline and extinction of speicies of animals, the rest of us shouldn't even attempt to do anything about it, like preserve the species in captivity in the hope that eventually things in the wild will improve.

And yes, there are people who care about the captive bears on bile farms, there is a large active group worldwide doing as much as it can for those animals and others.

Where do you think those bears go when they rescue them from bile farms? They can't go back into the wild.

I know all about saving animals from human cruelty worldwide,and given the record of Human rights in China, I wouldnt give a hope in hell`s chance of any captured human being rescued from China, never mind an animal.

Do you seriously expect me to believe that the reason all or any of the animals are kept in zoos, is so they can be released back into the wild when things "get better"?
That reminds me of the pictures on the front of a Jehovas Witness book !

On reflection I actually now agree with Chlidonias about keeping to the topic on this thread, so I will start another thread to discuss this new subject.

yess i heard that M.P.I. have paid over $150,000, for the up keep of jumbo , and the Franklin Z00 TRUST has more than $300,000 in their a/c I know that the circus never relied on hand outs , i think Jenny Chung should stand up and tell us all what Helen had against Tony , stop the lies about jumbos welfare when Franklin received her , to put it bluntly will it take another death for them to realise to get the man in that knows the elephant .

Mainfreight have been paying all of the elephant's ongoing maintenance costs plus will pay all of the transportation costs to the States.

Anybody know why Mrs Chung is still begging for money?
