Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2013

The panda plans look amazing! Thanks for sharing. I was really happy to see that an exhibit for chinese giant salamanders was in the plans. I'm almost more excited to see the salamanders than the pandas! :D:D:D

(On a side note, isn't the zoo starting construction on a new front entrance this year?)

I don't know exactly what the plan is, but there are (or were) markings on the pavement and they have removed some trees/bushes on the right-hand side. I'm guessing they will remove the rest of the bushes and add in more admission gates for the larger crowds that are expected.

I found a report from the zoo staff in 2011 about future plans for the zoo for the next decade. Im not sure if anyones posted it before... i dont remember seeing it but i could be wrong.

It discusses plans for tons of things. The giraffes are to be moved to the elephant exhibit with renos all over. Their current exhibit would be converted for hoofed stock. The hippos would also benefit from the departure of the elephants with a total redo with the aim of providing space for breeding and surplus. They talk about a total redo for the oragutans to be called Bornean/Sumatran Rainforest. It also has some rough ideas about the Canadain wilderness including the possiblity of the zoomobile running thought the elk/bison exhibit. They want to relocate the south american animals closer to the pavillion and convert it to focus more on south american creatures. Theres also talk about expanding the gorillas outdoor space to fill more of the area towards the medical building which would have glass and moat viewing to elimintate that annoying mesh. I like that idea very much. And the possiblity of adding a safari like ride through some of the savannah exhibits. Tons of info on possible future endeavours for the zoo. I hope most of them reach their potential.

Sounds like if the money is there could be an interesting decade to watch the zoo update itself. Heres the report for anyone who hasnt seen it yet. and if this has already been hashed out and i missed the whole discussion somewhere sorry.

While browsing the zoos website I noticed a contract for the visuals for the panda exhibit. You can get a sneak peak at some of the stuff they plan on showing us. Kind of neat to see what we will get to experience in May when the area opens.

Also they are looking for someone to install and run a zipline over Tundra Trek. Should be a cool experience for guests.

In May 2013, will the zoo only be opening the new panda exhibit and orientation centre, or will they also be opening all of the other new Eurasian exhibits for snow leopards, sea eagles, etc? So far, I have only seen one plan including the other animal exhibits

The other plans are on the website. Look under buisness opportunites. Its where they post contracts available to be bid on. In them there are usually plans or drawings. Im not an engineer or anything so most of it is jibberish to me but you get the idea of how everything is to be laid out.

Living so far from the zoo like i do I havent been able to go to the zoo to see the progress being made on the new exhibits but my money is on the zoo trying very hard to make sure the whole area is open for business when the pandas go on exhibit. They will want visiters feeling like the got their moneys worth in the new area if prices are going up and the best way to do that is stun us with the whole area.

I am not able to see the last 10 or so pages, I couldn't even print it.

Your not missing a great deal quartz92. Theres visuals of how the zoo staff will care for them, live interpretation centre 2 (no idea what that is as the visual is a question mark and a shaddow person), next three are of the bamboo corridor at the end of the interpretation centre. Then a map of where other visuals will go outside the pandas exhibit and the plaza. There will be a meet the pandas sign (has er shun and Ji Li listed) and markers to tell us who is in which exhibit (nice touch), individual info on each panda, then what they eat, what they do and why are they inside visuals, How to help the pandas and a zoo map that tells you where to find other chinese aninmals. Thats it. It stinks you cant see those pages but at least you know what they hold now.

Going to the zoo on Monday, hope to have a bucketful of pictures as well as some info for everyone. Happy Family Day Weekend Everyone

If you can, please try to find out about the non-panda Eurasian exhibits. Will they be opening this year too? What animals will be getting new exhibits? Other than that be sure to take lots of pictures and have a great day!:D

I'm pretty sure that all of Eurasia will be re-opening this year, although it may be later than the panda opening (they are aiming for May). You can find out a lot about what is being planned by looking under the business opportunity tab on the zoo website. A new restaurant and retail outlet are all being built near the Panda exhibit and close to the entrance of Eurasia. New restrooms are being built as well, with these located near the new snowleopard exhibit.
One of the old hoofstock exhibits (with concrete mountain) is being converted into a new snowleopard exhibit. Next to this will be a new bird of prey exhibit. The Bactrian camels aren't getting a new exhibit, but there will be a path that goes around it. The boundaries of the old grassy hoofstock yards are being changed and they will become drive-through exhibits for the Zoomobile. That pathway will become off-limits to the public. The barbary apes, dholes, and tahr are not getting new exhibits.

Wow thanks! I have been to the business opportunities section but all I saw were plans for the panda and snow leopard exhibits. Do you know if the red pandas getting a new exhibit or are they keeping their current exhibit?

West caucasian tur will remain on exhibit (no longer a phase-out species), aoudad will probably not be back on display, and mouflon will be tried in the drive-through paddocks. As for the chamois, I believe they will remain in the current exhibit as a phase-out species.

As for a new red panda exhibit, I think things will be staying status quo there.

Adams7, I'm pretty sure there will be some renovations to the Bactrian camel exhibit, but they might be minor renovations (new fencing, grading the soil, etc.)
