The Nonsense Thread

Lol, at least it isn't as bad as that man marrying his pillow.

On another note, can't wait to attend university this fall to get my zoology career started!

You said "university". I thought that Americans called it "college".

We call it a college or university mostly based on how good it is. There are colleges and there are universities. For example- Lincoln Technical Institute is a college while Harvard University is, well, a university.

A college is either a 2-4 year institution or a division of a larger university. A university is where you can get an advanced degree.

I just call it university since it states 'university' at the end of it aha. Sorry for the confusion. I'll be getting a bachelors also.

Also, has anyone read 'Zoos in the 21st Century: Catalysts for Conservation?' I'm thinking about getting that as well as other books in the series such as 'People and Wildlife, Conflict or Co-existence?'. Any input would be great!

Zoology degree, to be more specific, wildlife biology. I'll get a masters in both. zoology and conservation bio tho.

Its better to look at it like this - What career do I want to do when I am finished with my education? I see you claim Chicago as your location the degree you want isn't going to have much practical use in Chicago.

You have to have a plan from Day 1 on knowing what you want to do with flexibility and options in that plan. The days of "Im just going to college" are over. Its too big of an investment in time money and effort to get that kind of a degree without a specific career in mind.

Wildlife Biology means you likely are looking for a move to Texas or out west and its a hard career path. Do you really want to invest the time, money, and effort to stop with the Masters (or shudder the bachelors) and end up managing a Deer Farm in Texas? If you are going to commit to a Masters in Zoology just go for the D.V>M.. You don't pick the major and pick the career when you are done. You pick the career now and you tailor the major to what you want to do.

I actually plan on moving out of the state or even the country after I finish up college. I've already talked to some of my professors about doing my internship in South Africa, which is where I'd like to live. However of that doesn't work out, I have family in India that have friends who are professors in zoology. And as a back up to that, I could always stay in the US and become a professor or teacher or hold some kind of environmental or ecological job. And I don't plan on stopping at just a masters, I plan on getting a Ph.D.

I have a somewhat visual on what I want to do when I get out. I want to specialize in either herpetology or human animal interaction. I'm not 100% sure on that so after studying on it for a while, I think I'll be able to make up my mind or choose on going into a different field.

Why does getting a Masters in Wildlife Biology mean a move to Texas? I would think getting a sort of Zoology degree and Conservation Biology degree would give you plenty of opportunities in the zoo community.

Depends on if he wants to make money to make the investment worth it. Zoo jobs are few and far between especially good ones.

I'd consider a zoo job, I was an interpreter at the local zoo and I talked to many zoologists/conservation biologists who worked there. However, I would really like to be a wildlife biologist who predominately works in the field. And then later become a professor if possible. I know that working as a field biologist doesn't make you much money, but I'd like to be happy with what I'm doing. I wouldn't mind taking a zoo job if a good one was offered however.

Just advising you that those career paths are going to be shots in the dark as far as getting jobs.

I already know that it'll be hard, but it's my passion in life. Don't mean to sound corny and all. But, I think my willingness to move out of the state and/or country will help me land a job somewhere. I actually really wouldn't mind moving to Australia, Thailand, South Africa or India to work there. I just need to figure out what organizations do so I can specialize more.
