Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #2

Wow, bit of history there. The reason I asked was because Vetinary skills and astute business acumen are usually world's apart and not usually met in one person. If they wanted a top notch vet, that's one thing, but that wasn't her real job at Twycross, was it?

No, I don't think she ever practiced vetinary surgery while at Twycross, and as you say just because you are a qualified vet does not necessarily make you a good zoo director, however, one would have thought that someone who is a qualified vet would be caring and compassionate. I understand that when she took over the staff were given better wages, holidays etc., it was not long before rot set in, especially instructing Miss Badham and Miss Evans to vacate Norton Grange so it could be converted in palatial offices to accommodate a very large office staff, they had their bungalow built prior to this for their retirement but Miss Badham didn't want to leave the big house as long as she could manage the stairs, thinking of this now still makes me very angry annoyed, so I will leave it their.

The Chimps have had no chance to climb outside the mesh ceiling should be higher to allow more climbing, it is just a copy of the green mile now. Why don't they build a new enclosure?

The current Chairman has been in place for a number of years and is ultimately responsible for the Zoo, not the CEO, the rot is still at Twycross.

Why don't they build a new enclosure?

Did Louis pass following/during a health check? Or did he pass during his sleep?

Why bother asking questions you know the answers to?

If you want to slag off Twycross just slag off Twycross, stop wasting time being so faux-cryptic.

Given you only seem to visit the site to put the boot into Twycross and offer nothing positive about Twycross or anything at all about other zoos why not get it out of your system, once and for all, with a long post articulating everything about Twycross that annoys/upsets you and finish it there (unless you've got anything to say on non Twycross subjects)?

I think we all know why there has been no new chimp house built, no bloody money left after the reign of the previous director, right let us look at things here since the resignation of this person, giant tortoises have a new larger outside enclosure, Siamang gibbons now occupy Danny and Tommy's old house, new lemur walk through, I know these are not exactly a new thing but to the visitors of Twycross it will be. Outside enclosures built for primate species, new climbing facilities for the orangs, old Amur leopard house converted to house primates, camels now living in larger accommodation in the old giraffe house, meerkat enclosure currently being enlarged and improved upon, all chimps finally leaving green mile, this enclosure then being refurbished to house the Amur leopards, also, the bonobo outside area is going to be improved upon after the generosity of a local building firm, and a roof is currently being placed over Joe's old house to make things better for the chimps that live there, is there anything else?. I see that Twycross are currently advertising for a new C.E.O. is there any need to do this as far I am concerned the lady who took over in a temporary position after the resignation of the former London Zoo vet would appear to be doing a first class job, God forbid, considering the fragile state of this zoo it would be an absolute catastrophe if somebody were to come in and not know what they are doing, I suggest that the lady who is currently in charge takes over permanently, if this is possible, I like her style.

Whilst I don't doubt what you say, how are you privy to this information? If Miss Badham and Miss Evans had retired and had a home in which to move I'm not sure why you think it so wrong that they were asked to vacate zoo premises. Perhaps the zoo needed the space to accommodate staff.

Shorts please don't try and second guess my motives, it would be best if you listened to someone who knows what is being talked about. I have a great respect for the Zoo and am fortunate to know more then most about its running etc. Oh and I don't know all the answers to my questions............ Remember freedom of speech is something our nation prize and thank goodness for that.

Why not second guess your motives, that's the freedom of thought and speech we both prize highly.

For instance, if you're privy to such inside information I find it impossible to believe you don't know or understand why Twycross is not building a new Chimp enclosure (it's ultimately due to shortage of funds). If you don't know that then you're either very naive (which I don't believe considering your claims and manner) or merely stirring excrement (which would be tiresome). Which is it?

Twycross

Anybody who calls themself 'Integrity' is asking not to be taken seriously

You are base with your language and intellect Shorts, please desist with your primitive rants and grow up.

Really? Is it the word "excrement" to which you object? Come on!

Of course Twycross is not beyond criticism, but all the signs are that progress is being made.

Like Shorts, I find your sniping tone, and your pretence at objectivity ("I'm only asking questions!"), unreasonable. If you want to put the boot in, then put the boot in.

Is it not the only option any of us have? Given nobody has been given the context under which you write these very bitter sounding posts, I think it is. If we were given the context then perhaps we might be sympathetic, if nothing else we could at least make an objective judgement, we might even conclude that you are right. People on here know that the place has been a car crash over recent times, they are interested, but they want facts not here-say and when a question is posed back to you they get no answer. You can't just arrogantly say 'it would be best if you listened to someone who knows what is being talked about' like you are talking to a 4 year old and not expect to get some bullets back.

Elaborate on the statements you've made, be more respectful and perhaps people will reciprocate.

Update from Facebook, it looks like that Marmoset Treetop Walk is under construction now!

it is just a copy of the green mile now. Why don't they build a new enclosure?

if you read the various threads about this, you will see they obviously do not have any cash to build a new 'chimp complex' -which has been planned/talked about for some time but still does not happen.

Regarding similarities to the GreenMile/Chimp Row enclosures- the indoors of the old Gorilla House are far roomier than what they had before- that coupled with a now covered(?) outdoor area means there is far more room and it can house a larger social group-maybe only halfway as good as something purpose built, but its a distinct improvement nonetheless.

Twycross/Louis on Radio 2.

There was a feature on Radio 2's Jeremy Vine Show just now about the recent death of Louis the chimp at Twycross. Unfortunately I only heard the latter part-it seemed to be a discussion about the rights and wrongs of using those chimps in the old T.V. adverts and presented the usual 'for and against' arguments in a staged debate which seemed mostly about the ethics of making chimps appear in those adverts.

One listener rang in to defend Twycross with this enlightening statement;

'Nowadays Twycross is like, Primate Conservation'. mmmmm....

I honestly can't believe how much coverage this death is getting, I know he starred in tv adverts but still, national news coverage for something that happens every day at zoos around the world? I really don't understand the British press at times! Central News even ran it as one of their top stories yesterday.

I wasn't aware it had received a lot of press coverage, having only read it on here and then heard (part of) the item on the Radio. The Press do like 'shmaltzy' animal stories though and must have picked up the connection that he had been a 'T.V.' Chimp- though of course they never noticed the half a dozen or so others that also fit the bill and have died there in recent years. I think its just chance if the Press get hold of something and then run with it. I don't know if Twycross appreciate the free publicity or not- depends how the item was presented. The radio item was of course inclined to be inflammatory- but so are nearly all those stories/debates they have.
