Exotic mammals at each Australian zoo

Elephants aren't on exhibit at Australia Zoo anymore at least, their website states that the elephants will be off-display at this time, and the map now shows their exhibit as under construction. They were down to one female (Sabu), after their other two elephants (Siam and Bimbo) died earlier this year.

I actually got 7 deer species by combining red and wapiti, rather than the two fallows! :D
Sabu the elephant is on a circus property now according to the thread I saw it on, so "off-display" in that case actually means "not on the premises". So long as it isn't permanent we will leave it as is.

Red deer are Cervus elaphus and wapiti are Cervus canadensis so you really shouldn't be combining them anyway!

It will be interesting to see how permanent the move is.

Ok then, so there are 8 deer species, and so 117 species. Assuming a split in Dama.

.......... off the top of my head:

Delete everything at Bredl's and Dundee's - both collections now disbanded.

At DDZ - delete Fallow Deer, add Cotton-top Tamarin and Black-capped Capuchin.

very good.

How long have you had cottontops?

yes, 7 or 8. I don't see any good reason for splitting mesopotamica from dama but lots of other people do.....

There are also Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos at Dreamworld. As reported in another thread.

Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary (in Victoria) had a red fox on display 2 years ago when I visited.

According to Altina's Facebook page, which Jabiru96 quoted on the Altina thread, they had a wapiti born recently, so probably that should be added back in.... :o

Are there similar lists for herps and birds? Similar to the lists in the NZ forum.

There aren't, although an exotic herps list wouldn't be too hard to draw up. Birds would be trickier, although also do-able. I'll see if I can set them up, and then do a consultation as with the mammals.

That would be great! Thanks!

there are threads for both but not the same as the mammal thread yet. As zooboy says, the reptile list should be pretty "easy" (basically all exotic herptiles are illegal in Australia so what the zoos have is what the zoos have). Birds I don't know if we can do a proper list (like the NZ one) because there are a lot of exotics kept privately (legally) which I'm only sketchy on.

I'll see what zooboy comes up with.

can anyone (say, Monty) provide a list of ungulates held on private ranches because I thought that might be interesting to add under the respective species' entries. Things like scimitar-horned oryx, addax, bison, blackbuck, etc.

Also I know there are various primates held privately (the legal ones) in labs etc -- does anyone know the species?

Lab Primates in Australia definitely include Common Marmoset, Long-tailed Macaque and Pig-tailed Macaque. Not sure about any other species.

There's a Dromedary at Oakvale Farm and Fauna World.

There are Alpacas at Oakvale and Wagga Wagga Zoo

And under Pinnipeds, you can remove Australian Sealions and New Zealand Sealions as the first is endemic and the second native.

:p

what I'm going to do with the camel, alpaca, llama, water buffalo and deer is list the places we know, and then put a little note saying that they are common and probably found in many smaller collections. That covers my bases.

For the pinnipeds I've just included all the species because some are fully exotic (Californian sealion and harbour seal) and some are full natives, but some are vagrants (like the leopard seals). Because the vagrants are also natives I thought it would be tidier to just include them all regardless. There will be a little note to go along with them to that effect.
