Exotic mammals at each Australian zoo

Perth's loris is in the nocturnal house, so it can be hard to see but usually you can see where it is if you look for its big eyes.
Adelaide still indeed have their two sloths in the nocturnal house. I definitely think you will be able to see those when you are next there.

Taronga Zoo
Western Lowland Gorilla
Hybrid Orang-utan (off-display whilst chimp enclosure re-furbished)
Chimpanzee
White-cheeked Gibbon
Muller's Gibbon
De Brazza's Monkey
Francois' Langur
Black-handed Spider Monkey
Bolivian Squirrel Monkey
Cotton-top Tamarin

You can now add (if possible) ring-tailed lemur to that list and I believe they no longer have De Brazza's Guenon (went to Mogo Zoo, ring-tails now have the De Brazza's former enclosure).

Another interesting find I just found on the internet is an article from 1993 announcing the naming competition of twin newborn De Brazza's Guenons at Taronga Zoo. At the time there were 7 De Brazza's at Taronga (including the newborn twins). I wonder where the twins went to?

Here is the article: Two Names For The Twins, Please

I remember reading about the group of De Brazza's Guenon that they had in the early 90's. At the time an orphaned infant was being hand-reared by the keepers.

The way that the big players among Australian zoos ( and therefore ZAA) "lost interest" in De Brazza's Guenon is quite reprehensible and makes me despair for the sensible planning of collections in Australian zoos.

They bred well, were an attractive exhibit, were easy to import compared to most other exotic animals and only needed a bit of new blood from time to time but apparently that was all a bit too hard....

Can I get a mod to change the title of this thread to "Exotic mammals at each Australian zoo"?

Here is my list of members of the order Carnivora. Again, I welcome any corrections or additions people can provide. I have gone only to the species level (I can't be bothered unravelling which tigers or leopards at some of the smaller parks belong to which sub-species), and I have excluded dingoes from the list, as they serve as native species in Australia and it would make the list far too much work to track down which small native wildlife parks have them.

Melbourne Zoo comes out top again, albeit with the help of a few phase-out species.

Are the banteng in Australian zoos, true banteng or hybrids?
And how did they end up in Australia?

they are domestic banteng from Bali, introduced to Australia in 1849 on the Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territory (I think it was originally to a settlement there but they were later abandoned to fend for themselves). There's about 10,000 of them wild. All the ones in Australian zoos descend from the feral animals. I think they are farmed in small numbers as well?

Apparently Altina Wildlife Park & Crocodilus park of NT are the only 2 zoos with Viable Breeding herds of Banteng Cattle. (In zoos in Australia)

I have hunted near the coburg pennisula and i have shot a male banteng. They are just another feral that doesn't belong here regardless of their status in their natural home. They destroy natural habitat in NT just like the other feral bovines and equines. They should be eradicated.

I Understand yes wild feral populations of all aniamls in Australia should be eraticated or captured for breeding purposes but hating the animal for doing so well in our environment isnt their fault is the humans who released them in the first place. Their place (Banteng) are in Zoos not the wild. They are endangered but not native. I guess no matter the animal if not native dont belong in the wild of Australia.

stop putting the same post in different forums. Are the mods watching? time for tinkerbell to have her wings clipped

I have already been confronted about this and have explained my situation & apologised.
Plus not reposted that comment since.
I Just supported your comment give be a FN break!

I remember in 2009 there were watusi cattle at Werribee Zoo. I have not seen them since, and I have no idea what happened to them.

There is a rare breeds farm on Kangaroo Island who is trying to trace any Watusi that are in Australia. Apparently some ex-zoo stock were held in Qld, which is presumeably where the Werribee animals came from. Interesting to know where they went and if they are pure or 'upgraded' ie. cross-bred. A popular zoo display in UK.

This thread has long required being made into a sticky so I asked CGSwans if he would like me to make the current thread into a sticky or if he would like to make a brand new tidied-up thread for a sticky. Unfortunately he is extremely busy lately with work and so forth, so we made a plan for me to create a new updated thread based on his work. So I did this and made the changes I knew of, and then I passed it on to zooboy28 who made more changes from the ZAA records. I do want to stress that we couldn't have done it without CGSwans' existing thread because there's a ton of work in there! Before making it into a sticky I have posted it here first so everyone else can make comments on any mistakes, omissions, etc.

Although it is a list of exotic mammals I have included all the pinniped species (because CGSwans did) which makes sense because while some are native and some exotic, others are vagrants so sort of fall outside native even though they are native, if that makes sense. I also know that some species localities won't be complete, especially the deer and camelids, so maybe I should just put general comments on those species (“common” or “widespread” or something like that)? I have put individual numbers only for those species where there are just two or three left in the country and they aren't likely to be increased.

I have also obviously changed the format from “by zoo” in CGSwans' thread to a taxonomic one which makes it easier to see what is about in Australia.

The last proper update to CGSwans' lists was in 2011 so there have been a lot of changes since then. Major things I know of which have changed include:

*Zebra to Australia Zoo and Altina
*Brazilian tapir (back at) Melbourne Zoo and new to Alma Park
*Guanaco at Darling Downs (I don't know if this is/these are permanent or just for loan)
*Giraffe to Halls Gap
*The White-fronted lemurs went from WPZ to Gorge; and also the ring-tailed lemurs from Franklin Zoo to Gorge
*Ring-tailed lemurs to Halls Gap and Taronga
*Black lion tamarins gone (Adelaide)
*Pigmy marmosets to Darling Downs and Alma Park and Halls Gap
*Emperor tamarins to Alma Park
*Common marmosets to Altina
*Black-capped capuchins from Franklin Zoo to Mogo
*Mandrills and Siamang to Tasmania Zoo
*Gorillas to Mogo and Werribee
*Chimps gone from Mogo
*Last Caracal died (Melbourne)
*Serval to Halls Gap and Darling Downs
*White lions everywhere
*Lions to Altina
*Last Persian leopard died (Melbourne)
*Kodiak bears all dead
*Maned wolves to Hunter Valley Zoo and Crocodylus Park (and gone from the other places they were except Altina of course)
*Meerkats at Zoodoo
*Last Dwarf mongoose dead (Adelaide)
*Binturong to Alma Park
*Coati import to Melbourne and then to Gorge and Adelaide
*Mara to Adelaide (from Melbourne's import)
*Capybara import to Adelaide

Additional major changes from zooboy28 (plus lots of deletions/additions of species from individual zoos):
*Common squirrel monkey removed from list (Alma Park Zoo)
*Pig-tailed macaque removed from list (Crocodylus Park) – are there any others in the country?
*Sable antelope removed from list (Werribee)
*Bonnet macaque added to list (Mansfield Zoo)

Questions:
*Are there still blackbuck at Halls Gap?
*Has Australia Zoo just gone out of elephants, as suggested on a recent thread?

Zooboy28's list tally:
116 Species – excluding rats, rabbits, farm animals.
-39 Hoofed Mammals (14 Bovids, 7 Deer, 18 Others - elephant, giraffe, rhino, tapir, horse, etc.) [I make it 40 with 8 deer but that's because I've got regular and Persian fallow deer listed separately]

Elephants aren't on exhibit at Australia Zoo anymore at least, their website states that the elephants will be off-display at this time, and the map now shows their exhibit as under construction. They were down to one female (Sabu), after their other two elephants (Siam and Bimbo) died earlier this year.

I actually got 7 deer species by combining red and wapiti, rather than the two fallows! :D

.......... off the top of my head:

Delete everything at Bredl's and Dundee's - both collections now disbanded.

At DDZ - delete Fallow Deer, add Cotton-top Tamarin and Black-capped Capuchin.
