This thread has long required being made into a sticky so I asked CGSwans if he would like me to make the current thread into a sticky or if he would like to make a brand new tidied-up thread for a sticky. Unfortunately he is extremely busy lately with work and so forth, so we made a plan for me to create a new updated thread based on his work. So I did this and made the changes I knew of, and then I passed it on to zooboy28 who made more changes from the ZAA records. I do want to stress that we couldn't have done it without CGSwans' existing thread because there's a ton of work in there! Before making it into a sticky I have posted it here first so everyone else can make comments on any mistakes, omissions, etc.
Although it is a list of exotic mammals I have included all the pinniped species (because CGSwans did) which makes sense because while some are native and some exotic, others are vagrants so sort of fall outside native even though they are native, if that makes sense. I also know that some species localities won't be complete, especially the deer and camelids, so maybe I should just put general comments on those species (“common” or “widespread” or something like that)? I have put individual numbers only for those species where there are just two or three left in the country and they aren't likely to be increased.
I have also obviously changed the format from “by zoo” in CGSwans' thread to a taxonomic one which makes it easier to see what is about in Australia.
The last proper update to CGSwans' lists was in 2011 so there have been a lot of changes since then. Major things I know of which have changed include:
*Zebra to Australia Zoo and Altina
*Brazilian tapir (back at) Melbourne Zoo and new to Alma Park
*Guanaco at Darling Downs (I don't know if this is/these are permanent or just for loan)
*Giraffe to Halls Gap
*The White-fronted lemurs went from WPZ to Gorge; and also the ring-tailed lemurs from Franklin Zoo to Gorge
*Ring-tailed lemurs to Halls Gap and Taronga
*Black lion tamarins gone (Adelaide)
*Pigmy marmosets to Darling Downs and Alma Park and Halls Gap
*Emperor tamarins to Alma Park
*Common marmosets to Altina
*Black-capped capuchins from Franklin Zoo to Mogo
*Mandrills and Siamang to Tasmania Zoo
*Gorillas to Mogo and Werribee
*Chimps gone from Mogo
*Last Caracal died (Melbourne)
*Serval to Halls Gap and Darling Downs
*White lions everywhere
*Lions to Altina
*Last Persian leopard died (Melbourne)
*Kodiak bears all dead
*Maned wolves to Hunter Valley Zoo and Crocodylus Park (and gone from the other places they were except Altina of course)
*Meerkats at Zoodoo
*Last Dwarf mongoose dead (Adelaide)
*Binturong to Alma Park
*Coati import to Melbourne and then to Gorge and Adelaide
*Mara to Adelaide (from Melbourne's import)
*Capybara import to Adelaide
Additional major changes from zooboy28 (plus lots of deletions/additions of species from individual zoos):
*Common squirrel monkey removed from list (Alma Park Zoo)
*Pig-tailed macaque removed from list (Crocodylus Park) – are there any others in the country?
*Sable antelope removed from list (Werribee)
*Bonnet macaque added to list (Mansfield Zoo)
Questions:
*Are there still blackbuck at Halls Gap?
*Has Australia Zoo just gone out of elephants, as suggested on a recent thread?
Zooboy28's list tally:
116 Species – excluding rats, rabbits, farm animals.
-39 Hoofed Mammals (14 Bovids, 7 Deer, 18 Others - elephant, giraffe, rhino, tapir, horse, etc.) [I make it 40 with 8 deer but that's because I've got regular and Persian fallow deer listed separately]
-36 Primates
-33 Carnivores (inc. all seals)
-9 Others.
