Apenheul Primate Park Apenheul Primate Park News

New species for Apenheul this year, the park wil recive a group of Gray langurs, according to Zootierliste their latin name is Semnopithecus entellus.

so it might be a walk through enclosure then?

Good question. The way the information was brought out, it sounded like it might be. But there already is a raised walkway through the aviary, so they might try and hotwire it to keep the langurs away from visitors.

I'm trying to find out more, but we'll probably have to wait till the park opens untill we're sure.

Hanuman langurs don't really seem suitable for a walk-through exhibit, but then again, neither do barbary macaques and they are kept in a few (like in Apenheul) as well...

It should be a walk through, but with the option to separate monkeys and visitors if it doesn't work... IN Germany (I believe Hodenhagen), there is already a hanuman langur walkthrough.

Other news: the sifaka and a woolly monkey are pregnant and the cusimanses have left the collection.

A pitty that the birds have left as well as the cusimanes, I liked them both !
However a nice group of Hanuman langurs to replace the birds sounds quite good for a monkey-park and these will be then the only Hanuman langurs in a Dutch collection !
Also great news about the Sifaka ( hopefully a girl this time ) and the Woolly monkey !

Bonobo Hortense has given birth much earlier as expected to a baby boy.
She was planned to be send to Cologne Zoo together with her elder son Zamba but because she now has given birth the move to Cologne has to wait untill the baby is elder. (FB ).

Apenheul Primate Park recently had a new arrival; Crowned Sifaka female Holly, gave birth to a healthy baby. What's even more exciting is the fact that it is a girl!

Also, the Hanuman Langurs are expected to arrive within the first weeks of it's opening in April.

The source that it's a girl is reliable? Because it also seems that Belfast's 2013 youngster is a girl, which would mean a major boost (hope!) for the zoo population. (even if it's still pretty inbred).

Lovely species, one I like to keep track on.

The Hanuman langurs have arrived! Yesterday, a male from Polan arrived and joined the two femals from Germany who arrived earlier yesterday. In the first few weeks they will be seperated from visitors by use of a netted fence, and after that they will be released into their walkthrough aviary.

Orangutan Willy will be moved to Chester Zoo in June.

That the sifaka baby is a female has been confirmed :)

This is, without a doubt, extremely good news - the population is still pretty inbred as far as I know, but any new females are sorely needed.

I understand Holly the sifaka's babies all need hand-rearing because she has malformed nipples and cannot nurse them? How are her previous babies doing?

Last year l spoke with the keeper about this and they are incredibly proactive in allowing socialisation with mother and father ASAP, the last male bottle fed prefers the company of the mum and dad than the keepers! A huge achievement, however given their track record with primates not surprising :)

They are only partly hand-reared, ASAP they spend the most time with the mother and are only fed by the keepers, Holly knows this procedure really well by now, so no problems ;)

The last 3 young are all doing fine I think, I believe 1,1 offspring now lives in Paris.

0.1 offspring "Efatra" (2011, Apenheul) lives in Paris together with her mate "Douany" (2001, Paris). 1.0 "Daholo" (2009) lives in Besançon with his mate, but his mate doesn't accept Daholo, which is why he will probably be transfered to Port Lympne/Cotswold. The female at Besançon will then get accompanied by a male from Cotswold. :)

Very good news about the sex being female - even though the population is still a bit inbred, the news is always welcoming. Two females at two different collections! :D
