We don't like the photographers asking us week in, week out.. But they're never pushy.

I'm less concerned about them asking than I am about the paper and ink they waste printing out photos that will never be bought. Not exactly a great example to the public from a place that is supposed to be pledging conservation.

I believe that the Edinburgh website has a members only section: can any RZSS members enlighten us?

Alan

Minutes of various RZSS meetings, zoo news, member only Panda viewing slots, interactive lifelinks magazine, Species profiles "spotlight on" and members only video and photo galleries.

Thank you. That sounds very enlightened. Message to all other Zoological Societies - 'go ye and do ye likewise'.

Singapore has a similar 'get your photo taken at the entrance and buy it as you leave' scheme but they weren't too pushy and obliged to take a photo with my camera (I was traveling solo and didn't have many photos with me in them). It was funny when a group of middle aged Singaporean women wanted photo with me and crowded around while the photographers took photos of us as a group. I often wonder if any of the women ever paid for the photo and have it hanging on their wall.

"Oh look! A wild Victorian! I must get a picture of this majestic creature"

:p

Sorry to divert the current conversation, I'm planning my first trip to Chester in July (finally!), I'm making a list of mammal species I haven't seen yet, can anyone confirm that the following species are still in the collection/on display, I ask because this is from the 2012 list, if anyone could give me a link to the 2013 census that would be great! Also if there are any mammal species arrived last year, could you let me know that too.

This is the list:

Giant Otters - finally!
Bush dogs
Red-fronted lemurs
Black-tailed marmoset
Buffy-headed capuchin
African dormouse
Gambian giant pouched rat
Black spiny mouse
Turkish spiny mouse
European harvest mouse
Burmese brown antlered deer
Red forest duiker

Thanks in advance for your help!

Black-tailed Marmoset and European Harvest Mouse are off-show.

African Dormouse and Black Spiny Mouse are no longer held by the zoo.

All the rest are still kept and are on-show!

Turkish spiny mice have recently left the collection. Don't think the black ones are on show either.

Two mammal species arrived in 2013, Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus) , and Javan Banteng (Bos javanicus javanicus).

New this year is Southern Three-banded Armadillo (Tolypeutes matacus), but he is not on show.

And the lesser kudu.

I was amazed to see the size of the group of lion tailed macaque.

Has a male onager been sourced?

Chester have a male Onager that is being housed at a private equine facility in the UK until he is required again at Chester!

Must be the largest UK group, along with Howletts'. I don't know how many Chester have now(twenty +?) but they started out with just 1.2. They had a fortunate skew toward females in the early births (6 out of 7, I think), so with a subsequent change of male for an unrelated one, they quickly had the makings of a large group.

I agree with kaytronika. A very poor example to set.

A good point and at the very least a good reason for not pushing customers too hard as they enter the zoo. I'm not sure whether these snappers are zoo employees or part of a concession licensed by the zoo which would affect how they are managed (I suppose it might be different in different zoos).
I was very pleased when Chester stopped selling helium balloons a few years ago (helium is a non-renewable resource), zoos must set good examples in these sort of cases.

Chester Zoo has been voted the UK’s best animal attraction at the 2014 Group Travel Awards.

The zoo beat off competition from the likes of Yorkshire Wildlife Park, London Zoo, National Sea Life Centre and West Midlands Safari Park.

Chester Zoo’s marketing officer, Julie Griffin, said: “This is the first time we’ve won this award and we’re very, very pleased indeed – particularly as it’s voted for by those working in the travel industry who have been to the zoo, experienced what we have to offer and cast their vote on the back of their visit.

“The zoo is constantly evolving and offering visitors something different to see and experience – whether that’s a new animal, such as spectacled bear Bernardo who has just arrived from America, or the opening of a new venture such as our ice-cream parlour.

2015 is set to be a big year for Chester Zoo as Islands – the biggest and most ambitious development in UK zoo history – is set to open next spring.

The £30million project will see visitors set off on an expedition – moving through detailed recreations of habitats in the Philippines, Bali, Sulawesi, Papua, Sumba and Sumatra. They will walk over bridges, travel in boats and see buildings that are architecturally identical to those found in south east Asia.

Visitors can expect to see species such as warty pigs, banteng cattle, cassowaries, Sumatran tigers, Sulawesi macaques, Sumatran orangutans and sunda gharial crocodiles along the way.

It was indeed mentioned in the original press release.
