Twycross Zoo Bonobos

Diatou and Kakowet II became grandparents on July 28th, 2008.

Yasa, born at the Twycross Zoo on August 27th, 1997 gave birth to a healthy, strong girl at the Zoological Garden of Leipzig, Saxonia, Germany. The girl was named "Fimi" after an affluent of the Congo river.

Mother and daughter are doing well.

But look and see....

No, but if you look on the 2nd page of this thread there's someone called 'MexPirate' who was doing research on the Twycross Bonobos. They haven't posted for a long time but still might be able to give you this information.

According to ISIS a male bonobo is born at Twycross Zoo.

Unfortunately there are no information about the birth at the website.

Did this birth actually happen or is it a false report??

No its correct it just Twycross been its usual crap self at not up`dating its website.

Find out for us please which bonobo female has given birth and how the baby male is doing?

And please give us morning glory for Twycross's gorillas (and a new proven silverback to pull the birds)?

I have seen some photos of the Twycross bonobo outdoor enclosure and I was shocked. The enclosure is undersized, only one lonely dead tree to climb and no possibility to elude the visitors view, horrible.

Strangely they do like to be outside. The outdoor area is certainely bigger than the other great apes housed there.

Outside enclosure is currently under development, work is going on as with the other chimp runs. They are being done in stages ie; chimps by gorillas 1st, bonobos, then the bottom chimps then back to other chimps etc. This way the runs will all be done and the animals can have access outside. stuctures are being completed first and then hoseing, ropes, hammocks can be added later.
Bonobos run is awaiting for uprights to be delivered before they can carry on any more work.

Baby was born on oct 9th by Maringa,10yrs old (2nd Group) unfortunalty she had little milk and all was done but alas the baby was taking for hand rearing. Mother is doing fine.

Thanks for the update custard, slightly off topic do you have any updates on the gorilla situation?

Great to hear news of the new baby male , shame he has to be hand-reared though . I was at Twycross in late October and there was nothing to say there had been in a birth and , as usual , no keepers around . My experience is the the Twycross keepers do not seem keen to talk to the public .

I looked back through previous postings and found on page 2 mexpirate's details of the 2 groups . The scribbled note I made on my visit of the names on the 2 enclosures indicates that Katowet 2 and Jasongo have been swapped around . The previous post also indicates that Katowet 2 was having problems with his females , perhaps the move has helped . Who is the father of the new baby ?

If Diatou was pregnant in the Spring I would have thought she would have given birth by now , though one female loked a bit plumper than the others , could have been her .

All the Twycross ape enclosures are like that... In the case of the Bonobos, which DO use their outside area a great deal, two separate groups are currently having to alternate its usage.

@Bele
I send an E-Mail to Twycross Zoo in July and the Curator of Apes told me, that no bonobo female is pregnant at the moment....

Either the curator was ill-informed or and I think that it most likely he was not allowed or not willing to bare those information.

I am pleased to hear this as it means they will have far more spatial and climbing opportunities. Unfortunately the end result will probably also look even uglier- (like the Orangutan enclosure) since firehoses, nets and poles are functional rather than naturalistic. Its a pity they can't instead put in natural vegetation e.g. bamboo, natural logs and dead trees and green plastic 'swaypoles' or 'vines'to blend in better, as Chester and many other zoos nowadays do. A total or partial roof over the enclosure would help too.

Still, it will be a big improvement for the animals. All the Bonobos need now is the transfer of one group out of that house.:)
