ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2016

I'm thrilled for Kumbuka that he's done so well at London and I'm possibly doubly thrilled for Gernot that he's hopefully avoided Stuttgart!

I do wonder if we will see any more Gorilla babies sent to Stuttgart- it may have run its course. There are no babies in the nursery at present so any single baby that went there would be no better off than being reared adjacent to its home group e.g. Bristol's 'Afia'.

I reckon Mjukuu's strong maternal instinct( or is it her dominance, or both?) meant she 'stole' Gernot, this has happened before( in the USA) and Effie just accepted it. But he will be far better balanced as a result of staying in the group.

The current gorilla nursery (which is empty) is to be redeveloped into a guenon enclosure, so it seems that the nursery days are over.

For the record, Effie does not have a great track record as a mother so I'm not too surprised Mjukuu managed to take Gernot.

Nor am I. Her two previous infants were handreared. She did appear to know what she was doing with this one, but in the event evidently wasn't interested enough to rebuff Mjuku's interest.

Perhaps there's a little-known species named after the amateur ornithologist, John Nelson Hobbs.

Interesting but irrelevant fact: I think Regent's Park's last skuas were Antarctic skuas - I recently put scan of an old photo in our Gallery. The species is named Stercorarius maccormicki after the ship's surgeon and official naturalist on the voyage of the Beagle. He couldn't compete with the young unofficial naturalist, a Mr Darwin, and went home at the first opportunity. Mr Bynoe, the assistant surgeon, was promoted in his place.
Mr MacCormick subsequently went on Ross's expedition to the Antarctic, where he collected the skua, and he seems to have co-operated with his assistant surgeon who was the other naturalist on board, the botanist who became Darwin's closest friend, Joseph Dalton Hooker. Perhaps it helped that there were two ships, Erebus and Terror.

Looks like Jae Jae is bonding with them, wonder if he'll be allowed to stay with Melati and the cubs this time around?

As he is already in with them successfully now, as appears the case, I can see no reason why they would remove him later. Its possible the cubs arrived unexpectedly while the pair were still together- I would be a bit surprised if they hadn't planned otherwise to seperate them prior to the birth.

At Chester, I don't think Fabi was ever separated from Kirana, for a significant period, and they raised three litters together.
