San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo news 2016

Two babirusas were born yesterday and have already gone on exhibit for short periods of time.

$1 million worth of confiscated ivory is on display today and today only before being burnt tomorrow.

@ jayjds2 - I am just curious how you found out about the ivory display? A Google search brings up nothing and there is no mention of it on the zoo website or Facebook page.

I get most of my SDZ and SP news from a Facebook group dedicated to photography at the Zoo and Park. Occasionally messages are shared from representatives, such as the message Betsy (who is a member of the group) posted about Ranchipur.

Also, the Zoo just did a Facebook Live video on the display.

Referring to your previous message, there are (as I understand it) police officers, USFWS officers, and San Diego Global staff around. Also, the ivory burning tomorrow at the Park is open, but only by invitation.

Did it really snow or is this jargon for something?

Donators pay for some companies to make artificial snow for some of the animals to have in their habitats, as enrichment. Polar bears get it most frequently but they've also had snow days for pandas, Grizzlies, and snow and Amur leopards.

Some things changed with the hosting of the AZA conference and a lot of rumors sprung up. Here are some updates:

The Zoo's 1.3 gharials have moved from their Tiger Trail exhibit to the former Australian freshwater crocodile (and Australian turtles) exhibit. No word on what happened to the Australian animals.

Dwarf crocodiles are on exhibit in the former gharial exhibit and will eventually move to African Rocks.

1.0 secretary bird Stanley passed away :(. He lived in Elephant Odyssey with 0.1 Stella but they never produced offspring.

The rock formation in this photo is indeed going to be the waterfall exhibit, featuring dwarf crocodiles at the bottom.

There is construction going on in bits and pieces of Elephant Odyssey so some of the paths have changed.

What's E3?
Off topic but it is a video game convention where companys like sony Microsoft Nintendo etc. show off new games and revel new info about already reveled ones. Is the AZA one similer where zoos talk about future plans and/or expansions?

No. E3 is largely geared towards the general public and companies selling/promoting their merchandise.

On the other hand, the AZA conference is virtually exclusively geared towards professionals already in the field (no general public what so ever), and mainly hosts seminars and other similar things about husbandry, management, training, prominent achievements and other such things. There is usually a tour and some fun and games held by whichever facility is hosting as well.

Can anyone help me with who's who in the bonobo group here; I currently have the group as 9 individuals; three boys (Erin, Vic and Makasi) and six girls (Loretta, Lisa, Kali, Maddie, Belle and Mali). Can anyone help me out? Much appreciated :)
