Apenheul Primate Park Apenheul Primate Park News

The latest clue the park gives is:

Now a pizza and then back to work. Stripping with 25 colleagues for the guys.

Half is striped. It goes fast with all of us together.

Marijuana's decriminalised in the Netherlands, right?:D

Seriously, I'm intrigued and a little excited as to what the species is. I'm planning to visit the Netherlands next year and this might add Apenhuel to my list (as it stands, although I'm sure it's wonderful, there's no really unusual species for me to see there).

Have you seen Sifakas before?

Yes (as Zoogiraffe says), fantastic they are. Still can't get the clue though -think it's too cryptic for me (or I'm having a stupid day).

A new species (to Europe) of Sifaka then? That would be exciting and worth a detour.

The only thing DDcorvus is means is that Apenheul has (crowned) sifaka's which are a very special species as an answer to you statement that Apenheul would have no really unusual species for you.

Oh yeah, sorry it's been a long day:o

I'm lucky enough to have seen Crowned Sifakas bouncing about in a couple of places in the UK.

I'm not knocking Apenheul, it looks amazing but logistically theres a finite limit on places I can visit and, per Zootierliste, there's little, if anything, there that I haven't already seen. The Crab-eating Racoons and Agile Mangabeys just up the road are exerting more attraction at the moment.

Aaah, so they will finally reveal "Primate X" for the public. Having been on "the inside" of Apenheul I already know which one it is. I can't tell you which one but I can tell you to be very exited (and that it is NOT a sifaka them not being from Asia).

Now, let's see who can guess it first, eh? Maguari seems to have a nagging suspicion?

We don't have to guess anymore!
They will receive 3 male proboscis monkeys from Singapore in July.
They revealed it on there website.

I did (and a correct one, it turns out), but I wasn't in time to guess! :D

Very few other species that would really be worth that much hype and Apenheul aren't the kind of zoo to overhype an ulitmately quite dull species, so it had to be something exciting!

Very exciting news from an enthusiast's point of view. Seems a great expense to go to if it's just for three males though so I wonder if these three are being sent for Apenheul to prove themselves before being offered a potential breeding group?

Unique outside of Asia
A First for Apenheul Primate Park

In late July Apenheul is expecting three new residents. Arriving from the Singapore Zoo will be three male Proboscis Monkeys Nasalis larvatus. This species is found only in Borneo and currently can only be seen in a few Asian zoos. It is an honor that these animals come to Apenheul offering visitors a unique opportunity study these spectacular and interesting animals.

The appearance of the Proboscis Monkey is quite striking especially so in the males with their large noses and huge pot bellies. The Indonesian name for this species is "Orang Belanda" which translates to ''The Dutchman'....and these are the only 'Dutchmen' in a zoo in the Netherlands, or anywhere else outside of Asia.
These three animals are captive born and form a bachelor group. The Singapore zoo had been looking for a partner to a zoo program

Singapore has a significant surplus of males (2:1 ratio), so your theory that they may be 'guinea pigs' may not be too far off.

I hope Apenheul succeeds. There can't be a credible captive breeding programme for this species if only a handful of zoos in Southeast Asia have them.

I'm with Shorts - I still don't get how the clue works at all! Maybe it works better in Dutch?

I can see a big influx of European Zoochatters to Apenheul this year.....

I could be wrong but I think they are referring to the stripping of leaves from branches for storage and to feed the proboscis! I imagine a source of browse on which they are used to would have been acquired to help the monkeys settle in and adjust to any changes in diet that are needed!

A great addition to the European zoo community! I hope they do well and more come to europe! :)

So do I. I personally feel it has been long overdue that the colobine primates of S.E. Asia need a more prominent space inside European zoos (now that diet-wise we have fresh or freshly frozen browse and a specialised langurid pelleted feed.

But do I see it happening? Most former proboscis monkey keeping institutions over yonkers years like Koeln, Basel, Stuttgart et al who might still have some of the experienced staff of old ... have not yet shown any interest.

They will be housed on the former langur island. Currently this is made proboscis proof. Also the inside enclosures are being renovated (enlarged plus made in such a way that the three males can avoid eachother if they feel like). As the quarantaine will be done in these enclosures they will be visible for the public directly through the windows.

The 3 Proboscis monkeys have arrived! The three males will be in Quarantaine for a few months, but this will be in their indoor enclosures. They will be visible for the public this tuesday!

One of the 5 gorilla youngsters has died, mother Lobo still barries her young with her, as part of her bereavement.

The 3.0 langurs have arrived and are now on show
