Ive been fortunate to see Singapores three thriving groups of Proboscis Monkeys on a few occasions.It is no surprise that there are surplus males as they breed well..i was told that they are not difficult if fed foliage that grows in the region.this didnt really involve primate leaf-eater pellets so it will be interesting to see how Apenhuel solve this one.
 
The proboscis langurs have been allowed onto their island enclosure.

I have been checking out the website for this collection and it looks very impressive and I would love to visit at some point. I am aware they currently hold 3 male proboscis monkeys that they got from Singapore. Does anyone know of any plans to bring in some females and create a breeding group?
 
Apenheul has got this 3 males for loan to learn Proboscis monkey husbandry, if they have succes with keeping this species, there is a possibility that they will get some females in a couple of years.
At the moment they work together with all asian zoos who keep proboscis monkeys in setting up an breeding programme.
 
Thanks for that Lintworm. It will be interesting to see how they get on and I hope the monkey are able to cope outside of a tropical environment. I have seen this species in the wild and they are fantastic to watch. It will be brilliant for others to get the opportunity to see these magnificent creatures at Apenhaul Hopefully they will get some girls and possibly produce some babies. Have proboscis monkeys ever bred successfully outside of Asia before?
 
New York (Bronx) bred several Proboscis Monkeys.
In 1981, Erfurt Zoo in Germany bred a hybrid between a Proboscis Monkey and a Red-shanked Douc. Much as we might deplore the breeding of hybrids, I must admit I would have liked to have seen that specimen!
 
They have bred in a few german zoos ( first european breeding was at frankfurt ), but they couldn't create a breeding population and all animals died often after just a couple of month or a few years. I think, the last european prosboscis monkey, which was send from Stuttgart to Bronx-Zoo in 1994 ?,was born at Cologne or Stuttgart.
 
The Apenheul has edited 2 new species to their collection. It are L'Hoest's monkey who will be mixed with the gorillas. The second species are the Silvery marmosets, who will join the red howler monkeys and some other small species.
 
Somewhere last week, and "heart failure" is stated as the cause of death...

On friday 11 January a rare birth occured at Apenheul. A small but healty male Sifaka was born. Because of a disfuntion of the niples of the mother the young is now been hand-raised but will be introduced to the mother as soon as possible. She has been teached to bring her young ( this is not her first young ) to the keepers who can then bottle-feed the baby after which the mother can take further care of her young.
Sifakas are very rare in Europe and only 3 breeding-females are among the about 20 animals kept.
 
Very good news on the birth but safe to say another male is not what they'll have been hoping for!
 
Unfortunately one of the 2 proboscis monkeys, Julau, died this week, aged 11. They think the cause is liver failure, but an autopsy will be done.

Did you mean one of the 3? Or did one other monkey die over the past year?
