Apenheul Primate Park Apenheul Primate Park News

Was today at Apenheul and saw Kevin for the first time. Talk with one of the education-persons and she told me that he still is very stiff and not very active. During the time I observed him he was laying against the front-window of one of the indoor enclosures and didn't hardly move. Positive was that in the same enclosure a female and an already elderly young and this worked fine ! Hopefully he will recover completly and live an happy social life in the near future !
Saw also the old and 2 new Proboscis monkeys but these all 3 were also sleeping !
Further lots of young seen ( squirrel, red howler ( 2 ), spider, barbary, yellow-breasted capucine, gorilla, sifaka - already real big ! - and so on ).
Altogether a real nice day !

I have known Kevin since he first arrived in Berlin.
He never moved around much and his favorite past time has always been to lay close to the front window and to watch and contact visitors.
It is difficult to say if this is due to his disablement or just his personality.
He could be seen much quicker though when food was approaching.

As he has probably never seen a youngster of his own kind before, here is a video with one of his first encounters:

I forget if I asked you before exactly what his disability is? In another video related to this one you can see him climbing up (albeit rather slowly) and then walking apparently normally- he doesn't seem badly impaired in anyway. I would expect normal breeding from him too.;)

According to the veterinary of the organisation which helped to confiscate him once, his poor keeping at the circus led to a defective position of his hind limbs.
If he were in constant pain, he would perhaps be less peaceful.
Funny enough, just as it happened with his first female in Berlin, in Apenheul it seems also to be the female, mother of Kawan, taking the first steps.

Thanks. I can also see how greedy he is;)- he is down at the service door in a flash when something is offered to him, and then he sits nearby and watches the door for more titbits...

I think having more space with many ropes and climbing opportunity will help him get stronger and so improve his locomotion, but its not as impaired as I originally imagined.

Unfortunately, one of the proboscis monkeys died recently. It is one of the monkeys that came from Singapore two months ago.

I believe the following phrase sums up my feelings on this issue:

Oh bugger.

ETA:

On closer reading of the linked page, I think this might actually be a belated announcement of the death we already heard about at the end of October. At least, I hope it is.

anything on why the last two died? I thought they were younger animals than the original group?

As noted above, I think this is a belated announcement of the death we knew about, as it talks about post-mortem results and refers to the other animal imported this year in the present tense.

As regards the cause of death, the announcement says the following (translated from the original Dutch)

The veterinary pathology laboratory of the University of Utrecht, the body of Goalie investigated. This showed that Goalie had no fat reserves and had a shortage of albumin, a blood protein. Curiously, body weight of Goalie was not diminished: he was even 200 grams heavier than when he arrived in Apenheul.

It is unclear what the cause of the condition is and when it arose. The results of the section also explains why Goalie so suddenly died.

Sorry for the confusion - confirmed on Apenheul's Facebook that this IS an announcement about the death from October and they still have two left!

..breathe again! :o

As Nisha has deleted the original post linking the announcement, and it is probable that people will want to see this announcement considering it talks about the collection's plans for the species in light of this death and other interesting facts, here is the link again:

Although the link doesn't actually indicate so, I'm sort of presuming that these males are a trial, and if they can keep them alive and thriving over a decent period of time, then females may be forthcoming? There are bound to be losses along the way, however unfortunate that is.

@Pertinax, that is true, but because there were no females available this year, Apenheul got 2 young males as "replacement".

That is, I believe, the original plan.

What could have caused such a low level of albumin? In that unfortunate proboscis monkey.

Five Lion tamarins were stolen from the Apenheul last night. Thieves broke in and stole their night enclosure. Apenheul is closed during the winter.
