who has been separated? It has been a while since I checked notes but I believe all of the females are related.

Indi lives with her two daughters Chandra and Omysha. Ceyla Himali lives with her daughter Farha and her granddaughter Ruwani. They only have contact through fences.
Chandra, Omsyha, Farha and Ruwani are related. They all have genetics of Maxi, father of the first three females, and grandfather of Ruwani.
I think the two groups are separated officialy since the opening of the new elephant park.

They are officially separated due to Ceyla and Indi not getting along and often fighting when together

Why are 5 years old bulls moving ? I thought EEP wanted to transfer young bulls only when they would have reached 8 years.

@Gil this isn’t the first time this has happened. Sam at Whipsnade and Scott at Whipsnade moved on at the age of 5. Budai at Dublin moved from his Family heard at the age of 4.

Well that‘s the general guideline. But if space is availible and a zoo wants to move a young bull earlier, it will happen earlier. At the moment, earlier is the norm and not the exeption since most Asian bull calves start to pester the females way before their 8th birthday and need to be seperated from the female herd earlier.

In Dierenpark Amersfoort, the matriarch of the elephant herd, Khine War War, has died at the age of 39. She had been suffering from arthritis in her joints for a long time. Medical treatments, including painkillers, did not help enough to allow her to live a full life. It was therefore decided to put her to sleep.

Very sad news :( Amersfoort has had a very poor spell of luck over the past few years, between the loss of two calves to herpes, Indra’s extensive false (or possibly reabsorbed?) pregnancy, and now the death of War War. One can only hope that this is the last in the string of bad luck for them, and it’ll be nothing but smooth sailing, successful pregnancies, and healthy, long lived calves from here on out.

A handful (Einga Tha, Ananda) are set to enter breeding situations over the next few years. The majority of the others will likely either remain in bachelor holding at their current facilities, go to facilities with no breeding cows, or be shuttled off to eastern european facilities who simply want any elephants they can get.

Very sad news. She was still young. The elephant herd in Amersfoort has been having a lot of bad luck lately, so hopefully things will get better soon. RIP dear Khine War War. :(

Zoologischer Stadtgarten Karlsruhe - Saida und Jenny haben Rangordnung zu klären: Zoo-Einblick Folge 79 | Facebook | By Zoologischer Stadtgarten Karlsruhe | In der Serie "Zoo-Einblick" mit Zoodirektor Dr. Matthias Reinschmidt und Hyazinth-Ara Henry geht es heute um die Elefanten. Zwischen Jenny und Saida geht...
In Karlsruhe, there is an attempt to introduce Jenna and Saida. It's quite risky given the behaviour of both cows. Jenny is the dominant one so far and Saida is quite accepting of that, but I'm afraid that eventually she will want to be the dominant one. I'm a little worried about it and I think it won't be very successful.

Very bad news, 8 year old Omysha at Zurich is now experiencing a herpes outbreak as well :(

This is rather a troubling development for a variety of reasons, as coupled with her leaning on the older side of a herpes victim, omysha is also a proven breeder, having delivered a calf that died shortly after birth in 2020. Usually cows, even if they’re younger, seem to be more resistant to the herpes viruses once they’ve calved, but perhaps that depends on them having a living calf nursing off of them.

I truly, truly hope Zurich caught it early, and with aggressive treatment will be able to overcome this. Omysha is a valuable cow, and the only realistic option for Indi’s matriline to grow (assuming Indi never produces another surviving daughter) since Chandra is a non breeder. Both fingers crossed for a swift and easy recovery.

... I'm devasted, I just hope Omyhsa will survive... If she doesn't, it would be a tragedy. My thoughts are with the staff of the zoo, for who the situation is probably really difficult. I hope the treatment will be efficient enough to save Omysha, but as the zoo told, it's again a critical case.

Apparently the zoo undertake weekly tests for EEHV and since at this stage, Omysha is still eating, I’d be more hopeful of her chances of being able to fight it versus a case which is only identified once the elephants begins showing advanced symptoms.

To lose an eight year old female would be a devastating blow to both the zoo and her matrilineal line.

I want to be hopeful that she’ll survive since she’s on the older side but the most recent losses in the US population have been an 8 year old female and a 13 year old male so I can’t help but worry about Omysha.

Fingers crossed she doesn’t succumb to the virus like the others and Zurich welcomes a new batch of calves sometime soon. The zoo really needs some good news after the loss of two newborn calves in 2020 and the loss of Umesh earlier this year.

Zurich has really bad luck for 2 years, with the death of Maxi, the two calves, Umesh and the EEHV... It's so sad as they're one of the best zoos regarding elephant management.
