Beaver water world claims to be a rescue centre for abandoned reptiles, and certainly the RSPCA have rehomed some animals there in the past. But the reptile house is very cramped, only a step up from the conditions the reptiles would have had before the RSPCA had recieved them. They are really a glorified garden centre; reptiles and other pets are sold in the main building, supposedly to combat the trade in rare reptiles from the wild. There is also a small aviary for barn owls and a pen for Canadian Beavers, which tend to knaw at the wire fencing obsessively, a very bad exhibit. The rest of the site has 'pet' type animals in small aviaries.
That's frustrating about the gharials, they were amazing, I'm surprised Paignton gave them up.
