Monitors (Comodo dragons included) have heterochromosomes WW and ZW. So you can not change their sex by different temperatures during the egg-incubation (as it is possible with crocs, many tortoises or other reptiles).

Hi Jana,

That is peculiar stuff! I was under the impression monitor lizards were also sex determinants. One learns something every day! Will check with my lizards now .... (animal keeper, thinking of going into Uromastyx .. just love them)

Have to agree with you Jelle, Uromastyx are amazing! The group at Chester are always active and out and about!

What is happening with the zoo's crocodile monitors?

The crocodile monitors are on tomorrows repeat of zoo days.

I believe there is only the one in there now because they've grown older (I'm sure there is a sign saying something similar)

That just leaves the newly hatched male...

Their was only 1.0 juvenile off-show when i went round,with 1.0 in the tropical Realmand 1.0 in Islands in Danager.

rob, this seems to be a garden and not the fully enclosed house we were led to believe is opening next to the condors.

The pictures are the fountain gardens by the lions. The new house should still be built.

Does this mean the zoo are opening it in September, that seems such a long way off.

The article said the official opening would be in September, I think the butterfly house will be open before then.
