Spotted at Blackbrook on Saturday (29/3) was Chester's head of carnivores.
Was he their to offer a new species or to see which zoo had the more impressive wooden walkway?

shame, i was hoping Chester were getting some exiting new bird species or blackbrook some new species

Hello!

I had a great day out today. The penguin pool was amazing, and my mum was going on about it all the way home (an hour and a half..)

A few questions:

Where would the great blue turaco be, if she was on exhibit?
There was one Squacco heron that had got trapped outside it's aviary; Has it been recaptured?
The male Curassow was shaking it's head around Franticly, is this something that he started doing before arriving at Blackbrook?
When are more penguins arriving?
Any plans to get more Australian or American white pelicans?

There was only one disappointment today; the pathway near the germain's and Palwan peacock pheasant and Lady ross' and Violet turaco was closed off, so I did not see these species...

I am amazed at How well the park is improving though, WELL DONE!

I have taken loads of pictures, and here are some of them:

Im glad you enjoyed your day and blackbrook has come along alot recently lets hope it will continue to do so. The penguin pool is quite impressive hopefully the raised pool will be open soon and that it wont take them long to start using it.

The male Curassow was shaking it's head around Franticly, is this something that he started doing before arriving at Blackbrook?........ im am not sure i very rarely see this spieces i will check tomorrow and speak to the keeper(i have not noticed it the few times i have seen the bird)

Any plans to get more Australian or American white pelicans?..... i have heard that there is a possiblity of more australian but nothin of the americans

There was only one disappointment today; the pathway near the germain's and Palwan peacock pheasant and Lady ross' and Violet turaco was closed off, so I did not see these species...

this was so the builders could work on the river hog pen. the path was actually open today.

Are there still plans for Malayan tapirs?

Are the pelicans going to breed?

malayan tapirs havnt been mention fo r awhile so i would say very unlikly for the near future and yes they would like to breed pelicans i think there is a plan for a big breeding shed but not sure when.

Staffordshire's local paper (The Sentinel) has reported that 7 penguins have arrived to join the 9 that arrived in March.

5 came from chester to join the 9 others and another 7 came from europe to join the others these are currently using the raised pool. other new arrivals are 4 pink back pelicans and a pair of trumpeter hornbill.

the river hogs have still not arrived yet and i am unsure when the due date is now

I finally got around to visiting Blackbrook yesterday for the first time, and was very impressed. The sunny weather probably helped as there is not a great deal of cover. Overall I think this is a spacious first-class facility and the majority of exhibits would not be out of place in any of our more famous zoos.

The feel of the place is not unlike the exotic section of Martin Mere. Despite being previously known as World of Birds, and having a large number of bird species, the emphasis is definitely on waterfowl/cranes/pheasants. There are very few passerines, no parrots apart from cockatiels, and few birds of prey. I don’t mean that as a criticism though. It’s now a zoological park although there are not many mammals and some of the general public might be disappointed if they are expecting ABC animals.

The new penguin enclosure looks great, as good as Chester’s, and will be even better when there are a few more penguins in it. Plenty of other building work going on. With an annual attendance of only 20 000 it’s hard to see where the money is coming from.

I agree with other posters about the signage. My knowledge of birds is not that brilliant, but I do enjoy trying to work out which brown duck is which from the signs. Unfortunately many of the mixed aviaries and pens have signs identifying only a minority of the occupants. In particular, with all those species of pelican it would be helpful to have a poster showing how to tell them apart. The keepers were happy to answer my questions though. The famous open-bills can only be viewed from a corner of their pen and there is no sign up for them, and you could easily miss them if you didn’t know they were there.

The lemur enclosures are a bit “Twycrossy” and not up to the standard of the rest of the place. There is a new baby white-fronted lemur. RRH not arrived yet.

Overall I think this is a great place and I will definitely be paying a return visit before too long.

Got to say i was interested in the mottled duck aswell when i saw it on the waterfowls list i will look into it but if its on the list it should be at blackbrook

bloodycurtus - did you ever manage to track down the Mottled Duck? A few of us will be meeting up at the park on Sunday morning and I'd really like to track it down if it's (they?) are still there.

sorry i havnt yet i will ask tomorrow. i will be there on sunday and i might actually be out of the flamingo house (i have been building rearing enclousers to make use of the shed over summer). the lemur enclourse where out of date when they were built i think it was only 5-6 years ago hopefully they will be updated very soon. the reason behind this was they was problems with the original design and the old keeper got given a day to make a new design or no lemurs where coming.
