Bonobos in Europe

Horrible news :(
She was an amazing animal.

Sorry to hear this news.
A lady with character!

Can anyone post tell about holding Margrit and members in the early days, years 50 and beginning 60? Where they trained to eat at a table and things like that? Maybe some photos.

Nothing from the earliest days but I saw the group in 1968. ( and again a year or so later) Margrit had two babies by then, Mato(?) and Daniella who was still a baby on my visits. The others were Camillo (the father of the babies,) and the 2nd female Camilla. From memory I think after Camillo died that Mato became the group's male in the early group. (?)

She has a giant amount of offspring. And I only know the maternal lines because they are published mostly while the fathers only become known after DNA-analysis.

Wilhelma Stuttgart received a new male called KONGO.

Maybe it is CONGO II, born 1979 from the Rech circus in France, who sired hybrids with chimpanzee females there.

First time hearing about chimp X bonobo hybrids. Any more information on these and how prevalent they have been?

It is indeed this Congo, from the circus. I do not know who the owner is, but he lived since appr. a year (?) In Zoo de la Teste, alone. This zoo has also the male hybrid and a female chimp from the circus.

Is it really the case Congo lived alone for one year? At Zoo de la Teste.
How has he been housed?
Inside? Outside enclosure?
Could he hear the chimps? And the hybrid?
What has been his situation at Romagne? Why has he not been integrated at Romagne?

What will be his future?

Which animals will go to Hungary, Tsjechië? In the near future.

Congo is almost of the same age as Mobikisi. Is there any chance they came from the same transport out of Africa?
Congo seems me to be a small male. A small bonobo. Not like Desmond once at Antwerp. Just more like Zuani.

I guess that he will stay in Stuttgart now. This is a very good move for a Bonobo with a very unusual past for the species. With no (pure) descendants his genetic value is high for the European population too.

Thanks Pertinax.

Yes, he could play an important role in the Europian population. Could. Depending on different other factors. But a wonderful try.
Although efforts were made in the past to realize the same circumstances.

I watched a documentation concerning a private zoo in Bangkok a few weeks ago. This zoo kept a young bonobo female at the time of production.
