The zoo has opened their Manatee Rehab Center, with two patients, Churro and Randa from SeaWorld Orlando.

We have officially opened our brand-new Manatee Rehabilitation Center and welcomed our first two manatee patients, Churro and Randa. ㅤ Our state-of-the-art facility is designed to provide immediate care to stable, non-critical manatee patients in need of additional monitoring, weight gain or better weather conditions for release. We are incredibly proud to be able to offer our expertise and advanced veterinary care to this species, especially as our region has been at the epicenter of a historic wave of manatee deaths in recent years. ㅤ Shortly after opening, our team started caring for our first official patients! Churro and Randa were brought to us by our partners at SeaWorld Orlando after both were rescued from different circumstances where they couldn't care for themselves. The pair has become inseparable since they began sharing space. Randa is more cautious, while Churro likes to lead the way. They sleep side by side every night and wake to their lettuce breakfast. Last year, our Zoo became the first AZA-accredited zoo in seven years to welcome a new generation of white-nosed coati kits. This incredible achievement was thanks to our Zoo’s director of animal programs, Lauren Hinson, and her team’s dedication to bringing back a genetically diverse and healthy safeguard population of this species. For the time being, our week-old kits will remain in their cozy behind-the-scenes habitat to continue growing and bonding with their moms, Sky and Rita. They received their first of many routine medical exams, and we discovered we have four males and one female. We hope in a few weeks they can be introduced to our larger coati habitat and their other habitat-mates. What a cool conservation project the Brevard Zoo is involved with! It seems they added quite a number to the wild population since getting involved in 2016/17!

I wonder what the status is with Florida grasshopper sparrows today in Florida.
