Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo 2012

On my visit today, I noticed a few new/different things:

1. The maleo are finally on exhibit! They are, as planned, currently residing in the World of Birds. Their exhibit is the former sulpher-crested cockatoo exhibit (the first exhibit to your left after the bee-eaters at the entrance), and they are mixed with Black-naped Fruit Doves, Dollarbirds and Hooded Pittas.

2. Due to stress caused from difficulties with other birds, a Cuban Amazon was moved to the exhibit next to the maleos on February 23rd (about 5 minutes before I walked in, actually!). He'll share it with a trumpeter and a few other bird species.

3. Golden Lion Tamarins and Bolivian Gray Titi Monkeys now share an exhibit located, strangely, in the World of Birds.

4. Great Argus Pheasants, Tawny Frogmouths, Nicobar Pigeons, Luzon Bleeding-heart Pigeons, Pheasant Pigeons, and African Pygmy Geese now share an exhibit.

5. The species in "The Jungle" section on the 2nd floor have changed a bit.

6. A kea is on exhibit on the 2nd floor as well. Soap was smeared on the glass, making it known that there is a barrier there. It will be removed once the bird is more familiar with the exhibit (the same was done for the Cuban Amazon).

7. A pair of King Vultures resides on the 2nd floor, with a new pair of Hyacinth Macaws living right next to them.

8. A black-necked stork is currently living with the lesser adjutants in the aviary outside of the Aquatic Bird House. Anybody have any idea why?

*Check the gallery later this week for pictures from my visit! :D

@AnaheimZoo: do they still have a palm cockatoo in the World of Birds? This was the first place that I saw this species. Very impressive.

When did you see one there?

I don't recall any palm cockatoos, and I'm sure I would've remembered seeing one. Maybe it just wasn't on exhibit yesterday?

That was in 2005 so very possible that it has not been there for a long time. Thanks for the report. I love the Bronx Zoo and hope to get back there someday.

Wow! Really want to go now to see those Maleo!

Woah! I thought the title said it's part of evaluation, like their check-ups before the summer season (this is currently being done in the Reptile House). I didn't know they just closed it! And to think, I was just there this past Thursday... :(

A shame to see it go; like BeardsleyZooFan, I loved the species in there. Rest In Peace, Monkey House. We'll miss you.

I'll be interested to know why they closed it, and what plans they have. Thanks for the link to the article, uszoo, and oh, yes, welcome to ZooChat. :)

What do you think should be in the new exhibit they mentioned about there?

Well, Director Jim Breheny says "it's part of evolution," so it's definitely going to be more modernized than the Monkey House was. And they recently changed the Lion House, which was one of the zoo's oldest buildings, and look what it turned into- Madagascar!, easily one of the zoo's best exhibits. I have no idea what the Monkey House will be turned into, but hopefully it's something great!

There may be clues here ;)

I'm guessing it'll be the Safari Adventure? It says that feasibility study would possibly begin in 2011, so........ ;)

Any other word on that Wildlife Ambassador Center? That sounds pretty interesting. Or is that what will be built inside the Monkey House?

I can't say I'm totally excited for another "4-D" theater; I'm sure I'd be much more excited for something with real animals in it. :( Although it does say Safari Adventure Exhibit, and there will be additional smells and sensory elements, meaning something other than the movie...

I'll stay tuned. Thanks for the link, zooplantman.

[About 12 seconds later]

OHHH.... It says guests will experience an African safari WITH THE HELP OF. That means the whole theater thing is included in the exhibit! OHH, this may be better than I thought! :D

Does anyone have a current speicies list of the Bronx Zoo Monkey House?

Team Tapir

I'm sorry Team Tapir, I didn't take note of the species in there on my visit last Thursday. Had I known the Monkey House would be closing, I would've been all over it! :o

I think that these species were in there, I'm almost certain there were more species:
Emperor Tamarin
Bolivian Gray Titi Monkey
Cotton-Top Tamarin
Prehensile-Tailed Porcupine
Golden-Lion Tamarin
Common Squirrel Monkey
White-Faced Saki Monkey
Red-Handed Tamarin
White-Throated Capuchin
I'm sure there are more, just can't remember them
Some of the monkeys are being relocated to different parts of the zoo, and others are going to places like Central Park and Prospect Park Zoo.

@ BeardsleyZooFan, there was also a species of bat, although I can't recall which. Also, a few of the titi monkeys and the golden lion tamarins had been moved to the World of Birds some time before. Rock cavys were in the Monkey House, as well.

Oh yeah, I think there were Rodrigues Flying Foxes. It would also be nice if some monkeys were sent to the Queens Zoo as they're a North/South American zoo but with no monkeys.
