Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2016

Visited the zoo yersterday - did not see any keepers in hoofstock or by the Red pandas in Wild Encounters. Visited everything but Tropic World, the internal Fragile Kingdoms, and the Seven Seas entirely. All hard passes, but I usually visit those exhibits on most visits. Technically did not visit the furthest left hoofstock yards either.

- The Addax were off-exhibit, probably because of the recent death.

- The Cassowary, who I saw in August 2014, was gone, and a goose species has replaced it with new signage in the same exhibit. Anybody know the deal?

- I forgot to check on the aardvarks, an exhibit I always love but always forget about, and noticed they are no longer listed on the map. Are they still around?

- The finch exhibit in the Australia House was a fun one.

- There is still a lone sign relating to the Vampire Bats in The Living Coast despite the old exhibit being completely gone.

- I also noticed there are no Stingrays this summer, presumably due to last year's incident.

- Someone might've mentioned this, but there's a small tortoise yard fenced off as part of the small lake across from Feathers and Scales, with various species, and they rotate between here and Perching Birds.

- half of the inside of Packyderm House was open, the other half was closed to guests. There is no signage about elephants.

- Wild Encounters was interesting, although every animal but the goats seemed unwilling to interact with people today.

I also saw the renovations done to Feathers and Scales and the former Perching Bird House, the latter of which seemed to contain far more reptiles than birds now.

I meant to stop by the aardvark exhibit when I was at the zoo a couple days ago, but forgot. Will try to remember to check when I'm back at the zoo on Sunday. Don't know for sure if they are still around.

Two female Przewalski's horses have arrived at the zoo from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.

Also, the new Mexican Gray Wolf pups have been named Azul, Rio, and Ela.

An Amur leopard cub was born recently to first-time mom, Anastasia. Date of birth has not been announced. So far the cub is doing fine and is being closely monitored.

A wombat from the Adelaide Zoo in Australia will be coming to the Brookfield Zoo.

Two new callimico monkeys, a male and a female, have recently arrived. The female is from Dryer Park Zoo in Florida, and the male is from the San Antonio Zoo.

Violaceous turacos have recently been introduced to Tropic World: Africa section. Red-cheeked cordon bleu birds will soon be released into that section as well.

I am not sure if this has been reported yet but the Aardvark house is permanently closed shame for the zoo to no longer have such a unique species

I will be going to the zoo this weekend if anyone has any questions and I will provide as much info I can get

What a shame! This was the first time I saw this species outside. It was wonderful to see mother and son interact with each other.

I only ever saw them outside once. I never went to it to much. what do you think will take up this exhibit? maybe tasmanian devils.

The sign says that it's permanently closed. Now I'm not sure that's saying the aardvarks will never return or if they're saying the exhibit will never be in use again - regardless, it sounds like both options.

Doubtful. If you're keen to see Devils, Ft Wayne should have them for next year. Or you can head to Toledo or Saint Louis.
I am going to san diego later this year I will see them there. I don't see why not, the indoor exhibit is perfect and they would just have to add some vegetation to the outdoor yard and partner with the save the devils program. If not t-devils what else could come to this exhibit

As I promised I visited the zoo today and I got ALOT of info.

-Zenda and Isis where of exhibit today.
-Rose spoonbills will be coming to the swamp in a couple months
-Red river hog piglets where born last weekend and the hogs are currently off exhibit
-The festival of flight will most likely not return next year
-In the Hamill family play zoo the 3 banded armadillo switched exhibits with a reticulated python
-The new outdoor tortoise yard is being moved to the other side of the formal pool due to a toxic tree in there original exhibit (Note: once the tortoises get big a expanded outdoor yard will be built in the formal pool)
-The zoo is concidering getting komodo dragons
-Baboon island will be teared down and it might not be primates but a completely different type of animal.
-A sign regarding the passing of moss the sloth is posted in tropic world.
-Finally the panglions are still at the zoo and are in EXTREME quarantine. the staff is taking the process very slow However a new Exhibet for them is planned in the near future
