Captive Orca Population

Wuxi decided that since the smaller one is done they will have Belugas and Dolphins there. That’s why they decided to not proceed with the orcas at the actual location in Wuxi city cause they realized it was actually small for them that tells you they care about them a lot. At Shanghai Haichang they give them spa massage sessions every hour or so

About most captive males not being introduced to calves until they’re a year old because they’re too rough, that is…absolutely not true. In a healthy and well established pod with socially competent whales, bulls should be able to be introduced to the calves from a very young age, if not directly after birth. For instance, with the last two seaworld calves, Kyara was introduced to her sire at less than three months of age, and Amaya’s 15 year old brother was present for her birth (as well as grouped with her regularly from a young age). Bingo at Nagoya was present for the births of a number of his daughters, and Oscar was present for the birth of and housed with his son until the mature cows of the pod started to ostracize him from the social grouping.

The majority of issues with males being rough/sexually inappropriate with young calves is unfortunately an artifact of being in captivity (and more specifically how they are usually brought into captivity as well). Considering the majority of founder animals were brought in between the ages of three and six years old, they did not have time to learn fully appropriate social skills from their pods in the wild. Some animals pick them up better with time, experience, and maturity, but others did not. Plus as a fundamental aspect of being in a confined space, males simply cannot separate from the calves and cows as much as if they were in the wild, which can allow harassment from either the females to the male, or from the male to the calf if the females are not suitably protective over the baby.

Don’t get me wrong, I fully support work is being underhuman care, but there are fundamentally several aspects to the manager that I believe are still not being fully and properly addressed. Realistically, the future for them in captivity is in China and Japan, where unfortunately the emphasis seems to be placed on merely maintaining the animals for performance/display and not modernizing their husband treat beyond what is already existing. While what’s currently happening is working, it’s sad to see that further emphasis isn’t being placed on expanding habitats and really focussing strongly on building strong socially competent, matriarchal pods of animals.

That's correct. Tilly was introduced to Malia when she was a few days old (alongside Taima), and was even grouped often with Nyar after she was rejected by her mother. In a similar situation, Keet was grouped with his daughter Halyn after she was rejected by her mother.

I think what San Diego did with Makani and Amaya's births were great; allowing Kasatka and Kalia to give birth alongside all of their other family members.

The only case i've heard of of males being sexually aggressive towards calves, was Ikaika at Orlando and Keet at San Antonio. In both cases the calf didn't have any real mother figure at the time, and so the males were seemingly allowed to do this.

Ikaika? Katina is his mom and she always was there! And Keet with Halyn was super gentle for a male. The male that was really aggressive was Kyu at Nanki Shirahama Adventure World Japan who Ended up killing his own daughter!
I did felt Bad that Cookie, Kohana and Morgan gave birth alone. Taku was the one that was aggressive towards Ikaika when he was born… i believe Taku was jealous that he wasnt momma’s boy anymore. He nursed from Katina until he was 10 years old i saw him as a young bull nursing from Katina…and she had Ikaika already.

Nope... initially Katina almost showed little to no interest in Nalani. Ikaika was extremely sexual with Nalani, and eventually both he and Taku were moved to other facilities to allow Katina to focus on Nalani.

Keet apparently mated with Halyn, although yes he is a super gentle male.

In the Japan case, apparently Ran rejected the calf immediately after birth. The calf became disorientated and got stuck in the gate between the two pools. Kyu, who was in a frenzied state due to the birth, yanked the calf out and began to toss the calf around. The trainers attempted to take the calf to no avail, and they even opened the gate allowing Ran in, but Ran didn't intervene.

Most of Seaworld's females have given birth by themselves. Mainly to the exception of San Diego, who have allowed Kasatka to give birth alongside her family.

I've never heard that re. Taku being aggressive.

Taku was still nursing from Katina at the age of ten!? Are you quite sure of this?

Yes i saw him myself in person!

Normally calves nurse typically up to the ages of one to two but ten is rather shocking! You would've thought the birth of Ikaika let alone Unna back in 1996 would've stopped him.. He was apparently also very close to Ike, almost like a surrogate.

Yeah lol an 18 ft (that was his lenght at the time) male orca nursing is quiet funny to see. Just how Luna nurses from Ran II even tho she is not her mom.

He may not have been nursing. There's been many instances of orcas swimming underneath others in the nursing position. Kalia did this to Ike before, Amaya used to do it with Shouka and even Nakai and Makani have done it with Ulises!

I know what i saw i’m not clueless about orcas lol there was a White cloud coming out of her mammary glands and thats milk. So yes he was nursing ‍♀️♀️

Intruiging. I think its likely Ike was nursing initially and then Taku came and tried to nurse from her too!

Also info from a KSW regular he said that Luna and Lovey doesn’t get along well since 2015! She rakes her just as bad as Earth was!

No it was actually the other way lol Taku was nursing and actually when Ike saw the cloud he began nursing and Taku didn’t wanted to leave until Katina put him on his place! Lol!

That’s interesting. It seems Lovey dosent get along well with anyone besides Lara. Lara has a great relationship with Luna though, they’re almost like mother and daughter.

Its better with Ran

Lovey only gets along with Lara… she is jealous of Ran sharing so much time with Luna. Thats why she rakes Ran so much the trainers had decided to let Ran create a bond with Luna to send them to Suma but now they realized that it was not a very good idea as now Ran gets a lot rakes from Lovey and now they are trying to make the pod unified again.

Yes, Lovey seems to be quite a problem whale, much like Katina at Orlando. Maybe it would've been a better choice initially to send Lovey, Earth and Oscar to Kanagawa instead of Bingo, Ran and Stella.

Although I think from now the best option would be sending Ran and Luna to Suma Aqualife park, and then continue to breed from Lovey at Kanagawa via AI.

Katina has never been a problem orca… Taima was. And Stella, Bingo and Ran were sent to Nagoya and they sent Earth away from Lovey cause she was raking him bad! That’s why they sent him away but they shouldn’t of sent Ran back to KSW…
Now that they made them create a bond Ran spends a lot of time with Luna. And Lovey is super jealous.
I think the aggressive behavior in Lovey’s case might be due to lack of space in KSW..

Katina is quite the problem orca. She had problems with our own daughter, Kalina after she arrived and has even had problems recently with Trua and Malia. She was also extremely dominant towards Tili and even Gudrun initially.

Regarding Taima, Taima was always more dominant over Katina, and Katina often created problems with this, always wanting to be the most dominant. Taima never had problems with the other orcas...

I'll second Jambo, Katina was and is definitely a problematic whale. She's b*tchy and is generally not the best with the majority of other whales. She performs just fine with them, but when it comes to unregulated social groupings, she has issues. Besides the whole regularly allowing her sons to mate with her thing, allowing her 10 year old calves to nurse, and almost rejecting Nalani, she has an odd management style of the pod.

As for Taima, that poor whale just never had a good life at Orlando, and the vast majority of her issues were simply from being retained there. She should have been transferred to San Antonio with Takara when they had the chance, this could have likely prevented her pregnancy (and subsequent death), and would have finally given her a chance to have a decent quality of life. Her and Takara got on well, with Takara assuming the dominant position. She likely would have assumed the mid level dominance position (above Unna but below Takara), and with a competent and firm matriarch like Takara, would likely have thrived in that rule. She was actually dominant over Katina, and when they were grouped together Taima did assume the dominant role, but once again, this would lead to Katina lashing out at the other whales and generally acting up. After typing this I realize Jambo said the same thing, but I'm leaving it in, lol. FWIW she did have a bit of contention with Kalina periodically as well, but I think that was more of a 50/50 thing, as Kalina definitely had her moments as well.
