was nice to see the young okapi outside with mum but does any one know why they have been separated from dad??
The zoo's Facebook page has announced the arrival of a 10 month old female Malayan Tapir from Belfast. Housed in the Cattle House, and obviously eventually destined for Islands.

This is excellent news, i knew they were in the islands plan, but hadn't expected the arrival so soon! Personally after the loss of the species at Twycross, i'm glad to see another holder in England, even if Chester isn't quite as accessible for me.

I wondered how long it would be before the zoo announced thisalthough in a way I am sad we're not going to get someone posting in this thread with astonishment at spotting a Malayan Tapir unexpectedly, lol.
I feel confident that Chester will do better with them than Twycross did- IMO its not a species Twycross should have persevered with for so long. While of course Chester have had them before- many moons ago- Bongorob I'm sure could tell us when the last one left the Zoo.
Actually the species isn't in the first phase of the Islands plan at the moment, unless the plan has changed yet again, but I believe that she will be held where she is for a good while! The zoo's Facebook page has announced the arrival of a 10 month old female Malayan Tapir from Belfast. Certain parts will be put in at a later date, like Madagascar, but the main area will all be completed in one go,but a few years down the line new enclosures can be added to keep it fresh.Don't panic the Tigers will be done in the main phase!I always presumed that Islands was going to be in one phase and not opening until it was all done, is the tiger enclosure in the 1st phase?
Napo, a new male Jaguar has arrived today from Amneville, France... next week he will be joined by a female (again from France)
Exciting times![]()
