Chester Zoo Chester in 2013 #1

The zoo's Facebook page has announced the arrival of a 10 month old female Malayan Tapir from Belfast. Housed in the Cattle House, and obviously eventually destined for Islands.

Whilst I'm here, I do like the re-jig of the West Zoo paddocks, though I think the loss of the Gemsbok is a shame, and to an extent the Ostriches too, if only because it leaves the zoo with just 1 species of ratite, when they housed 4 a few years back.

I realise it was asked further up the page, but do we know what will now become of the now empty Bongo/Crane area?

Thanks hevden and bongorob that's good that the Philippine spotted deer are still at the zoo , they must just not like the cold weather :)

was nice to see the young okapi outside with mum but does any one know why they have been separated from dad??

Male and female okapi come together briefly to mate, then go their separate ways. Female okapi take themselves deep into the forest to give birth to their young.

This is excellent news, i knew they were in the islands plan, but hadn't expected the arrival so soon! Personally after the loss of the species at Twycross, i'm glad to see another holder in England, even if Chester isn't quite as accessible for me.

I feel confident that Chester will do better with them than Twycross did- IMO its not a species Twycross should have persevered with for so long. While of course Chester have had them before- many moons ago- Bongorob I'm sure could tell us when the last one left the Zoo.

I wondered how long it would be before the zoo announced this :p although in a way I am sad we're not going to get someone posting in this thread with astonishment at spotting a Malayan Tapir unexpectedly, lol.

Almost that for me today although I had read on here that one had arrived, still surprised me when I saw her today, in the enclosure next to the chimps
made my day :)

congo buffalo just had a calf as well , yesterday if I remember correctly:)

She left in 1983.

Actually the species isn't in the first phase of the Islands plan at the moment, unless the plan has changed yet again, but I believe that she will be held where she is for a good while!

I always presumed that Islands was going to be in one phase and not opening until it was all done, is the tiger enclosure in the 1st phase?

Certain parts will be put in at a later date, like Madagascar, but the main area will all be completed in one go,but a few years down the line new enclosures can be added to keep it fresh.Don't panic the Tigers will be done in the main phase!

Thanks for the reply, makes sense to build the main parts, get the people in (and there money) then just add the so called smaller species as and when

After looking out of my office window at blue skies all morning, I decided to pop down to the zoo at lunchtime for a quick visit, and in the hope of catching sight of the Malayan Tapir. Predictably, the light completely disappeared just as I pulled into the car park.. but I did get a couple of glimpses of the new arrival - a fine animal.

Pics aren't good enough to clutter up the gallery with, but here's a shot for the record.

Yes I've just read this news on Facebook Nisha, and yes it's all exciting :)

That's brilliant news
Hopefully they will go in the waterfall enclosure so we can see them properly

I guess they will go in the empty side, if they are going to try and breed them, that sides outdoor section is more secluded

Does anyone know yet which enclosure the new Jaguar has gone into ?
Am planning to pop up for an hour tomm
Am on nights at work at the moment but can't wait to see the new one one will try to fit in a quick visit :)
