It's a big area closed off, but the walk through will just be the size of the current aviary and old tiger exhibit, so still big, but not that big, the closed are includes the otters outdoor pool and penguin and play area, all of which are staying.

That's a big plot of land for a Madagascar-themed exhibit!

Unless we are going to get Indri, Sifaka, Fossa, Falanouc, some aviaries and a reptile display.

:)
Well it Is just the second phase of development so they may come later on. If this is just the lemur walk through I imagine it'll house both species on lemur island and they may bring in some other species, but you never know!

Am I right that the Chester Zoo pages on the plan suggest, not stating, but highly suggest through the pictures that gorilla and Pygmy hippo are planned for the future?

They do state so as well, but as always plans can change, and there is no real time line on when, if they do in fact happen.

The plan is for both pygmy hippopotamus and western lowland gorilla to be held at Chester. as for indri there is no chance.

Thanks jde7582 and Bongorob. I really should learn how to read before putting up stupid questions. Would be very happy if these plans are ever realised. As I think they are both are notable gaps in the collection.

Just occurred to me that the 'to-be-closed-off' section has the monorail running right through the middle of it - could be interesting!

Aye-Aye, Lac Alaotra Gentle Lemur and Narrow-Striped Mongoose would presumably feature in a Madagascan development too (whether that is in this 'phase' or a future one remains to be seen).

I doubt the aye aye would move due to the time spent making their current exhibit, unless they use those exhibits for a new species afterwards.

First law of Chester Zoo - never rule anything out in the long term when it comes to exhibits , structures or areas changing purpose!

The most logistical way forward, would be to use the islands in danger building either as is or extended for more Madagascar expansion, then having Komodo and maybe Galapagos in and expanded islands area. But as its Chester who knows, but it's fun to widely guess.

I would be very surprised if the Malagasy displays did not eventually include a much wider range of species than mentioned above - although they might not appear in this area until Phase 3 or a later phase. Don't forget that the zoo currently holds two species of tenrecs, red fody, radiated and ploughshare tortoises, iguana, Parson's chameleon, pin-striped damba and Pachypanchax sakaramyi.
Although I agree with bongorob that indri are not going to come to Chester; there are many other interesting species that might arrive, such as fossa, falanouc, more lemurs, the lovebird, crested ibis, a plethora of geckos and a multitude of chameleons. I would love to see the return of vasa parrots and the arrival of the beautiful rheophilous cichlid Paretroplus nourissati (lamena in Malagasy).

Fair enough, I think I was thinking more short term in fairness and the area wouldn't be good for a number of nocturnal species later down the line if the aye aye move, but I won't try to predict any.

You forgot the panther chameleon in that pretty extensive list.

And the Kotsovato cichlids currently(?) in Secret World of the Okapi, 2 mantella species as well as several invertebrates.
While it is going to be very interesting to see how this, and possible future phases of the Madagascar zone turn out, wild speculation on long-term plans does rather tend to clog up news threads. ;)

Past the bush dog and pudu enclosures, where the anteaters used to be. The enclosure currently has an agouti sign but has both of them in. They seemed a bit nervous when we same them this morning. Went back an hour ago and no sign of them.
