Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2022

Quick question: When the monkey house first opened, the moat around the outside enclosures was stocked with White-Clawed Crayfish. Are they still there?

I will visit Chester Zoo in June for the first time.

Can anybody please tell me which areas/exhibits of the zoo are currently (and until WHEN) closed/blocked (because of avian flu or any other reason)

Thanks very much in advance

I was told that all the outdoor walkthrough aviaries, also Monsoon Forest and Tropical Realm are all back open. Bat house I believe is back open again too.

Have a great first visit to Chester Zoo.

I believe the cattle house which has a species of buffalo in it and a anoa is closed and I think that’s all

I have a feeling the upstairs area of Tropical Realm may still be closed.

Thanks guys for your quick replies. So lets hope that they will stay open at least until after my visit...;)

Avian flu restrictions have been lifted in the UK, usually only in place during the winter. However it has been getting worse and this year first time its gone on long enough for free range eggs to be reclassified.

I mean when they do have an avian flu situation I think they should just have disinfectant mats around and just keep the places with free flying birds open

I always take my own food to the zoo and eat by Oakfield House for about 10-15 mins. That way I am not wasting other time walking around and seeing all the animals as Chester is getting bigger than a day zoo.

Best practice is to keep all birds in during Aviation flu and to only use a certain pair of footway to enter the enclosure. Disinfect mats only work if people use the properly so best closing them IMO.

Keeping birds myself its better to be over cautious.

I was talking to one of the keepers yesterday I'm not gonna name her but she's normally in slotz and she said that they don't know yet

Also what is the layout in Madagascar area with the lemurs e.g which species in the Walkthrough and any bachelor groups also any lemurs on lemur island or near onagers

There are 3 species of lemurs on the canal islands opposite the camels and onagers which include
White belted ruffed Lemurs
Black lemurs
Alotran gentle lemurs

On Lemur Island is mainly the bachelor group of ringtails

And in the walk-through there are ring tailed , red ruffed , crowned and and red bellied

And nearby from there is a pair of coquerels sifaka which live where the black lemurs used to live

With the ring tails they have two groups a bachelor group and a breeding group however they rotate the groups regularly e.g one day the breeding group will be on the island and the other day the breeding group will be in the walkthrough when I last visited The bachelor group were in the walk through and the breeding group were on the island
